  1. Pro Tips for Breastfeeding Mothers While Traveling Travelling is therapeutic to almost everyone as we can see millions of people around the world travelling everyday. For many people travelling is a hobby, for others it’s pleasure and a way to destress, rejuvenate and revitalize. They hope to enjoy, get to learn about new cultures and gain a lifetime of experiences. Many times people travel alone, with family, friends and sometimes with a little toddler as well. Traveling could be challenging for mothers who are breastfeeding their babies as they have to address many issues while they are on their journey. Mothers have to follow traveling protocols, want to enjoy their vacations, spend quality time with their loved ones, create loving memories as well as looking after all the baby’s needs. Doing all of this makes the situation more daunting and strenuous for the mothers. Breastfeeding is considered as the safest and healthiest choice for infants. As we know that mother’s milk contains lots of immune factors, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Sometimes the milk supply is low and not sufficient for the baby, the mothers can use lactating cookies to ensure an increase in milk supply. Here I would like to highlight a few points which could be beneficial for mothers who are breastfeeding their infants while they are planning to travel. 1-Reserve a window seat If you have made a plan of traveling, try to travel on personal transport. It would be easier to breastfeed anytime the baby wants. If you are traveling by plane you must book your window seat prior. This will help you comfortably turn around and latch the baby properly without getting conscious that people are looking at you. Sitting properly and comfortably keeps you calm, stress free and least troubled. 2-Hydration Many times people suffer from traveler’s diarrhea in which their gut and bowel movements get unstable or overactive. This could be due to change in atmosphere, water or sometimes the person may be too sensitive. Travelers suffer from nausea and vomiting as well. This all can temporarily reduce milk supply. The key is to keep yourself hydrated, drink a lot of water, keep medicines with you and along with that keep lactating cookies, emergency brownies or bars as a milk supply booster and to overcome all these inconveniences. 3-Baby carriers Newly turned mothers are always advised to buy a sling, baby carrier or strollers, so they can easily carry the baby without having extra strain on their arms and shoulders. It

  2. also makes it easier to get around in places like airports, bus terminals or train stations. Basically, you are satisfied that your child is with you and near to you. Your hands are free to carry your bag, click pictures, eat food, hold tickets or carry baby essentials. Baby also stays calm, comfortable and at ease when he/she is near the mother. 4-Doctors and vaccinations One must be insightful regarding upcoming vaccinations of their infants by being knowledgeable about precautionary medicine and essential vaccinations. See your doctor to discuss and take advice on vaccinations before your travel, he may suggest to have vaccinations earlier or may advise not to go and delay your trip. Sometimes travel medications are given to the mother and they then pass to the toddler through breast milk. 5-Breast pumps You need to feed your baby several times irrespective of what mode of transport you have chosen or how tired you’re. Try to feed him/her with expressed milk or store it in bottles. This will be of great ease, whenever the baby is hungry you can immediately give out the milk bottle and can abstain from any hassle in public. According to the TSA, breast milk is considered as ‘liquid medicine’ and you can carry a good quantity of it in planes. Along with that you must carry a power point adapter for the electric breast pump to express fresh milk anytime you need to. 6-Travel agents Ask your travel agents to give you full assistance and knowledge about which airlines are child-friendly and which are not. Keep a direct contact with them instead of online bookings and notify them of your concerns as well. Like you need help at managing luggage, accommodating the car seat or stroller when getting on and off the plane. They can also ensure that you have a window seat as discussed above. 7-Traveling bag Make a traveling bag keeping in mind all what baby essentials you may require when you are traveling. This may include a few extra diapers, baby wipes, hand sanitisers, bibs, disposable changing sheets, zip lock bags, extra romper or pacifiers too. You always need them as you never know when you will be in need. Summary While you are traveling with a baby, ensure his safety and hygiene. If your baby is on exclusive breast feed you may not have to worry about clean water, bottle sterilization or availability of infant’s formula. Babies sometimes get panicked, cranky or irritated,

  3. this is all pretty normal…stay calm and relaxed. Just attend your baby the way he/she wants. Don’t avoid feeding just because you are in public. This will certainly reduce milk supply. just be responsive to your baby needs. Include lactating cookies, herbal supplements for steady milk supply. avoid all kinds of caffeine induced and alcoholic drinks. Your diet will certainly affect your milk quality and supply.
