  1. July 17, 2017 Be Part of the Circle of Life When You Buy Theater Tickets for The Lion King Your New York experience would definitely be incomplete without watching at least one Broadway show. This can be challenging if you have children, though, because most of the musicals can be long and are not marketed towards younger audiences. Page | 1

  2. That’s not the case with “The Lion King”, the award-winning spectacle that offers a unique experience to both children and adults. With astonishing costumes, mesmerizing choreography, catchy songs, and a masterful use of puppetry, “The Lion King” is sure to impress. What’s It About? Based on the Disney animated film of the same name, “The Lion King” tells the story of Simba, a young lion cub and the successor of the Pride Lands who fled into exile after witnessing his father’s death. After growing up with a meerkat and a warthog, a childhood friend, Nala, encouraged Simba to challenge his uncle and usurper Scar to take his rightful place as King. The 1994 film was met with critical acclaim, and critics were particularly enamored by the songs penned by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice. It’s no surprise, then, that the critical success of the film translated well to the stage: after premiering at the New Amsterdam Theater on October 15, 1997, the musical bagged a total of six awards during the 52nd Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Currently, it’s the third longest-running show on Broadway (behind Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera) and the highest-grossing Broadway production of all time. It also holds the distinction of being one of the best, if not the best, musicals based on a Disney film. Sights and Sounds Most of the songs are taken straight from the Disney film, with a couple of new songs written for the musical. You’ll definitely find yourself humming “The Circle of Life”, “Hakuna Matata”, and the romantic “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. Each number is accompanied with dazzling choreography and powerful performances from the actors themselves. Apart from its captivating songs, the musical is also renowned for its use of puppetry in portraying the animal characters. There are over 200 puppets used in the show, both hand-held and full-body. The largest puppet is the Elephant that makes its grand entrance during the show’s opening number. You’ll also notice the attention to detail given to the masks and costumes, which are handcrafted to portray over 25 types of animals. Page | 2
