  3. The next few slides show examples of these Elements of art

  4. Contour line: Defines the outside edge of an object.

  5. Contour line

  6. Line design: Repeating lines that make geometric or organic patterns.

  7. Bumpy and wavy lines Spirals lines Organic lines: Are not something that can be identified as a shape, but have interesting line qualities. These are found in nature the following six slides are examples of some of them.

  8. Organic lines thatcoil; Can you see the coils in his hair?

  9. Organiclines are made more interesting when they are placed closer together to create a darker values and farther apart to create texture in the light areas.

  10. Organic lines that are branching.

  11. Organic lines can come in zigzags and starburst.

  12. Organic dots also called stippling can create great organic textures in these pen and ink drawings.

  13. Structural lines: Interior lines that show the objects unique construction. These examples show from simple to complex interior lines.

  14. Structural lines in the interior of the subject helps to show the construction of the object.

  15. This drawingshows more detail in the interior structure due to the interior lines.

  16. Repetition: The rhythmic repeating of objects and patterns.

  17. Find the repetition in these patterns: One of them repeats horizontally across and the other pattern is on a diagonal.

  18. Identify Experience Label, list, name, define, relate, recall and use art making tools

  19. Observe the variations of line found in the outside edges of objects.

  20. Draw organic (bumpy) lines that illustrate, the variations found on the object’s edge,either imagined or real Illustrations.

  23. After drawing the outside edge of an object, experiment with creating multiple lines within the object, to show pattern and depth.

  24. Create line designs showing overlapping, depth and correct proportional sizes.

  25. Depth gives the illusion of objects going farther back. Things made lager and bringing them forward gives the illusion of depth. Now you try it.

  28. Examples of drawings that show depth.

  29. Overlapping and size are drawing techniques artists use to show depth. One shape overlapping or in front of another shape shows depth. The shapes in front of the others look closer because they are bigger. Using Value is another technique. The mountains farther away are lighter in value and the shapes close up darker in value and more intense in color.

  30. Overlapping Project These rings shows depth using overlapping and value. Value: The relative darkness or lightness of a color. Different values of color are used to show depth the rings farther away would be lighter in value and the rings up close would be darker and more intense in color.

  32. Try using Structural lines to show the interior features of objects. These are two different examples of showing interior lines.

  33. With out the interior features of these sandals it would be hard to know what this drawing would turn out to be.

  34. “Emphasize line quality by using a variety of the basic characteristics” Look for curved/straight, solid/broken, thick/thin lines in drawings or paintings.

  35. Many mediums can be used to express line such as wire. These pieces show curving line work.

  36. Different thicknesses of line as well as curving, straight and wispy line give variation. In this example of wirework.

  37. Sticks can also be used as a fun project. This gives you the straight lines in the body but variation in the main and tail.

  38. Paintings can express line work.In the paintings by the artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec are great examples of interior line work as well as depth.

  40. Analyze Integrate Compare, contrast, distinguish, examine and incorporate.

  41. Study American Indian petroglyphs, rock art & line designs. Ute Indian

  44. After reading the book If Rocks Could Talk by Jane Bush Create personal petro glyphs using charcoal or chalk on paper or flat rocks.

  45. Make a pinch or slab pot out of clay and apply a cultural surface decoration.
