  1. How to Make Your Fridge More Energy Efficient

  2. If you have a feeling that your fridge is not running as efficiently as it should, you’ll no doubt be concerned about how it is affecting your electricity bill. While there are some fridges that run more efficiently than others, there are always ways that you can reduce the energy consumption of your fridge. How can you reduce the energy consumption of your refrigerator? We've got a few tips for you. The first one is always allow hot food to cool before placing it in the fridge or freezer. This is because if you put hot food in either the fridge or the freezer, it makes your appliance work harder to maintain a chilled temperature. The second one is if you’re going to be defrosting frozen food, if you put it in the fridge to defrost from the previous day, for example, it acts as a cold reservoir. This means that the appliance doesn't work as hard because the cool air from your frozen food is dispersing through the fridge.

  3. Number three, if you have a lot of frequently used items such as milk or anything you want to grab quickly, make sure you have it at the front of the appliance near the door. Then you can open it up and get it out straight away rather than having to rummage through the whole fridge to find it. This means the door is open for less time, which means that there's not as much cold air escaping. Number four, if you've got kids in your house and they have a lot of favorite things stored in the fridge, keep these at eye level for them. Then they can just open the door, grab them and go. As we probably all know, most kids stand there holding the door open, trying to decide what they want and letting the cold air escape. This means you have to close the appliance and it's going to take a lot longer to bring it back down to temperature.

  4. Number five, the physical location of the refrigerator is really important. You do not want it in direct sunlight and you don't want it next to other hot appliances. For example, when your cooker is running, it is going to disperse heat through the kitchen which will affect the running of the refrigerator. Try to keep it away from other heat sources. Obviously one very key element to a fridge is the star rating. If you’re looking at purchasing a new appliance, look around at all the brands that have a really good energy efficient appliance such as Liebherr which has a five and a half star rating.
