  1. Protect Your Rights at The Scene of an Accident

  2. The scene of a car accident can be one of the most confusing scenarios to navigate. In addition to being emotional shook-up and even in a state of shock, all parties are not always peaceful and accommodating at the scene.

  3. With so much happening quickly and added chaos from ongoing traffic, it’s important to understand what MUST occur in such critical moments and what mistakes are often made, leading to a more complex case.

  4. Keep this handy list in your glove compartment, with you insurance, in the event you find yourself in this situation in Colorado:

  5. Steps to Take After an Accident: • 1. Stop as soon as it’s safe and make sure you and your passengers are away from ongoing traffic. • 2. Call the police.

  6. 3. Be careful about what you say. Statements you make at the scene, or verbal deals you discuss with the other driver, can be used against you later. 4. Take pictures of the accident scene and vehicles, including license plates.

  7. 5. Take a photo of all insurance cards. 6. Get the names and telephone numbers of all witnesses.

  8. Avoid: 1. Ignoring the signs and symptoms of an injury assuming you will get better. 2. Failing to seek medical treatment, if needed, due to fear of the cost or lack of insurance. 3. Failing to report a claim to your own insurance company.

  9. 4. Failing to have your insurance company inspect your total loss assuming the at-fault party’s insurer will be fair. 5. Providing a statement of “no injury” before you understand the situation and have put some time and distance between the accident and your life.
