  2. How does language contact influence language change? Language contact refers to situations where speakers of different languages interact and influence each other's language use, which can result in language change.

  3. Lexical borrowing • When speakers adopt words from another language • Encounter new concepts or ideas

  4. Phonological borrowing • Adoption of new sounds or pronunciation patterns. • When speakers are exposed to different accents. • Communicate in different accents.

  5. Syntactic borrowing • Adoptation of sentence structures from another language. • Encounter new ways of expressing ideas. • Begin to incorporate them into their own language.

  6. Semantic shift • Meaning of a word changes due to language contact. For example, the meaning of a word may shift from its original meaning in one language to a new meaning in another language.

  7. Code-switching • Switch between two or more languages in the same conversation. • Result in the mixing of linguistic elements from different languages.
