  1. About Bathtubs For The Physically Disabled We do not often stop and think how lucky we are to be able to get into and out of our bath unassisted until such time that some ailment or physical disability prompts us to appreciate what we had before. Taking a bath or a shower without the help of a nurse, a carer or your partner or spouse, is a privilege that should be appreciated. When you can no longer do these things on your own, it inevitably means that you have to sacrifice a great deal of your independence – not a thought too many people find easy to come to terms with. There are many people living on their own, or in their house or apartment, and not in a retirement village or center where care is offered. Many of these individuals and couples can still look after themselves, except they find it increasingly difficult to negotiate the edge of their bath or a step at their shower to get in and out again. If they can no longer lift their legs for fear of falling or slipping, or because of constant pain and discomfort, they can no longer do it on their own. However, to most problems there are solutions – also to this one. The answer for most is to consider a bathtub – or shower – for the physically disabled, those individuals with impaired movement. These days there are good solutions all over the world for people that need such a bath or shower – or a tub/shower combination, often a popular choice. Unlike a few decades ago, it is now possible to have the bathtub or shower in your bathroom changed and replaced with one of these modern types of baths that makes it so much easier to take a bath or shower without having to rely on another person’s assistance. There are companies that design and install these, installations sometimes taken care of in no more than a day or two. These tubs differ from those that we normally have in our homes since manufacturers often consider all important safety aspects. Firstly, many of these tubs have a walk-in door that is opened inward so that you do not take up unnecessary space and bump into someone or something when you want to get into the bath.

  2. Once inside and comfortable in a preferred position, you simply close the door and fill it with water. A good designer will always ensure that the door closes tightly and that there is no possibility of leaks. The best among these tubs are fitted with a number of grab bars so you can hoist yourself up when need be or hold onto when you want to gently lower your body onto its seat or your neck onto its rest. This makes it unnecessary to hold onto a surface such as the top edge of the bath when you want to stabilize yourself – the grab bar fulfills this function. They are normally placed where one needs them most so that they offer a solid basis for you to hold on and not slip, and to prevent you from hurting yourself. This is so much easier than having to lift your knees and legs and swing them over the tub’s edge, or to have to rely on another person’s help. These bathtubs are gaining ground among millions worldwide, and certainly in the US where the best suppliers remain busy installing them in people’s home. They are the modern alternative to the traditional bathtub which limits the person with physical disabilities. They allow you a much greater sense of independence and a newfound trust in your own ability to take a bath unassisted. These modern bathtubs have made life so much more bearable for thousands of individuals.
