Our opening sequence was called ‘The Collector’. The concept was to show a mysterious man working his way through his trophies he has collect from victims he murdered. The opening sequence sets the uncomfortable, heightened, atmospheric scene as to question why this psychologically distressed mass murder committed the crimes he did, played out in the rest of the film. We have predominately used traditional conventions to support a horror/ thriller genre. Introduction
Camera work • We used the camera work to create the mood and atmosphere of our opening sequence. The camera we used to shoot our opening sequence was a Black Magic Arri Alexa camera. • We wanted to give a sinister feel to some of the collectables and wanted to show our character through the use of close ups as someone who is physiological disturbed and showing signs of obsessiveness. We drew on some of the techniques used in ‘Spiderwick’ to focus on individual objects in a means of building suspense. • One way in which we conveyed this intention was using an extreme close up shot, using a macro lens, of him looking through a magnifying glass and his intense satisfaction as he registered the importance of his trophy. This is a conventional shot used in horror films. • An example of how the mystery was created was by following his footsteps slowly across the rug and using a wide shot to capture the blood and mud on his boots. Not only does this create suspense but follows Bathes enigma code theory used in many horror opening sequences. For example, ‘seven’s’ opening sequence. • However, we consciously didn’t use high action shots, as they would be used regularly in films with a thriller genre such as ‘baby driver’. Instead we focused on the psychological/ horror aspects of the movie like ‘Blackswan’. • We used a panning shot to give the viewer the feel of the extent of the trophies implying magnitude of his murders. • We also use a point of view shot, when looking through the magnified glass, to place the audience in the shoes of our protagonist character, changing the audiences view of the opening sequence, in the eyes of a murderer.
Mise en scene We followed a conventional horror mise en scene: • Lighting: low key, sinister, shadows were formed with the LED forest bar light. • Costume: • regular, middle aged dress code e.g blue jeans, red flannel shirt. • dirty boots created an enigma code for the future plot. • No make up was used, hair left untouched, a hint of madness. • Props: old collectable items used to syndicate the murder trophies and a dark atmosphere. E.g type writer, heart, liver, bat with blood, radio, clock, hair, polaroids, cows head. • Set: An old Persian rug, 2 victorian wooden tables one with draws, naturalistic. • Location: We used a Black box room in a filming studio, representing a garage in the back of his garden. • Physicality: body language, eye contact, stance, gait, the place where he leads from. • Colour pallet: dark colours and reds.
We chose not to use any diegetic sound, as this would detract from the suspense and mystery. Often in horror and thriller opening sequences you would hear very little dialogue or any diegetic sound. This is a typical convention for a horror genre. We created music that could enhance the atmosphere by using chimes, synths, reverb and panning the sound to create a distorted feeling adding to the mystery. Sound
Conventional sound Sound used = RED Sound not used = BLACK
To edit our opening sequence we used Adobe premiere pro. Slow paced editing Variety of the lengths of takes, but mainly long takes Jump cut to Doug coming in Montage of props, which constructed the idea that the collector is mentally disturbed (this is similarly seen in ‘seven’) Titles: fonts, placement of the title Sound tracks Editing
The characters in our opening sequence • Doug Quinn= protagonist, the collector About my character • Messy • Poor hygiene • Psychological disturbed • Hermit- lives in solitude • In my research I found male characters from other movies that played the typical psychopath, this helped us shape our character and create a true image to our protagonist character. Our inspiration for our character was from the films; ‘Silence of the lambs’, ‘America psycho’ and ‘the shinning’, 'no country for old men’. Social groups: • White,Male • Middle aged • Lower middle class
Explaining how my opening sequence represents my characters conventionally/unconventionally • The opening sequence represents the main character as a psychopathic murderer. Examples of how we created this? • Camera work- e.g close up shot of his eye ball looking through the magnified glass • Lighting- shadows across his face, the darkness suggest that he is sinister and evil. • Costume- unconventional to a horror genre, no obvious signs of his being a psychopath • Make up- messy hair • Physicality- facial expressions, slow intense movements, an expression of satisfaction surrounded by his trophies and collectables. • We consistent enforced this character through each of the film making elements predominately in a conventional way e.g ‘seven', ‘spider-wick’, ‘extremely wicked, shockingly evil and vile’. Did we challenge stereotypes or use stereotypes?? Conventional OR non conventional ??
Who is our target audience? Our target audience consists of people over the age of 18 who enjoy watching horror and thriller films. I assume our film would appeal to a diverse audience of both men and women, however may not be for some. This is due to the graphic imagery and explicit scenes, which might not be appropriate for all audiences, such as the faint of heart.
How does our film, opening sequence target and engage our target audience? • As a viewer, you should expect that the remainder of the film would have gore and possibly violence because our opening sequence involves explicit objects and shots. This is something that can be seen in a conventional horror film that fans of the genre can enjoy, as well as be fascinated and engaged by. The rest of the movie will show the psychopath hitting and murdering his victims, which some viewers will find upsetting and avoid watching.
In terms of our film being from a horror genre it depicts that from the socio economic group that the target audience would be from grades: C1,C2,D and E. My reasoning behind this is particle due to the stereotypical audience for thees genres. However, if I think about the victims in our film, we have specifically chosen young women which create a narrow target audience to grades C2, D and E. Socio economic group
A demographic profile is a way of describing an audience based on factual information about them. This could include Age Gender Class Ethnicity Nationality Sexuality ability/disability Relationship status Number of children The target audience for our opening sequence and film is a diverse group of people. All genders, ethnicities, nationalities, sexualities, abilities/disabilities, and relationship statuses are included in our target audience. However, I would suggest that our target audience for our overall film is adults over the age of 18, mostly from the working class and possibly the middle class (due to the genre of the film). The reasoning for this argument is due to the content included and graphic imagery in the film. Demographic profile
