  4. Long Term Causes of the War of 1812 • War btwn Great Britain and France tests American neutrality • Both countries seize American trade ships: steal goods, impress sailors • Embargo of 1807: • US stops trade with all of Europe • Hurts US economy • Trade only restricted w/ GB and France
