France in our Wake the morning we left. A Great Sunny Day to take the ferry to Dover England! I had always heard the cliffs of Dover were white, but seeing is believing. You know you are close when you see those white cliffs. A view along the coast as we climbed the hill to the castle.

  1. France in our Wake the morning we left.

  2. A Great Sunny Day to take the ferry to Dover England! I had always heard the cliffs of Dover were white, but seeing is believing. You know you are close when you see those white cliffs.

  3. A view along the coast as we climbed the hill to the castle

  4. Although a beautiful sunny day, the wind was rather forceful. Might it have something to do with the proximity to the sea coast?

  5. Just one view of one of the castle buildings in this rather great fortress. The taller battlements are part of King Henry’s Castle. We took the picture from an inner segment of an outer battlement overlooking the calm English countryside and a large valley cut leading to the sea.

  6. Tunnels cut into the cliffs provided further security for the castle complex. The more modern looking brick façade is from the 20th century timeframe. There is a tour of the WWII tunnels which is very enlightening. The historical society is still working on the Napoleonic tunnels to ready them for tours.

  7. Alan on the steps to the officer’s mess and dormitories. A very nice building indeed. A tunnel leading to an outer battlement.

  8. Another well kept defensive battlement. There are slots for arrows and cubby holes for the guards.

  9. Weapons technology through the ages. Cannon and catapult each high tech in their day.

  10. Entry to King Henry’s castle with the Union Jack aloft in the breeze.

  11. Canterbury Cathedral, a place of beautiful architecture. In spite of all the crowds, it is also quite peaceful. There is a large campus surrounding the cathedral itself with many buildings for various support activities, I presume.

  13. The hustle and bustle of the square in front of the cathedral. Makes me want to rush home and pull out my volume of Chaucer and give it another read.

  14. Such a nice day visiting, it was sad to leave. We’ll be back though.
