Literacy • Adapting for Special Needs • Access to free textbooks and other readings can be found at the web sites listed at the bottom of this page. • The text can be copied & pasted into any word processor to adjust font and type size for students with impaired vision. • Second, for students with difficulty reading, copy & paste the text into a free text to speech program called Balaboka(click on it; it’s free!) and the text can be read to them. • Finally, for English language learners, copy & paste text into translations programs like Free Language Translation Tool (again, click on it, it’s free!) and your students can obtain a translation in 64 different languages that can be used to assist them in understanding the text. • Free electronic books/e-texts: • Infomotions • Bibliomainia • Project Gutenberg • The Plays of William Shakespeare Click on title to view website

Literacy • More learning strategies • Use these strategies to integrate technology into your lessons: • Alternate formats for writing stories – used video editing programs to create stories, like Imovie (Apple) and Moviemaker (PC) or Audacity to develop audio stories. • The Universal Design for Learning center - has a page that addresses their many examples and resources and will take you to cool video websites to assist in teaching strategies. Check it out here: UDL Center. • Box of Tricks – use this awesome resource for over 200 websites to assist in teaching strategies. • Classroom Resources – PBS Teachers, great resources broken down into age categories. Literacy • And More learning strategies • Teaching decoding skills, especially for younger learners: • GameGoo: Learning That Sticks – interactive site for prekindergarten – grade 3 based on state standards for language arts. • Between the Lions – site that offers information on phonic skills and word activities and also provides visual and auditory assistance. • Chateau Meddybemps: Fun with Letters – helps children learn phonics. • Words & Pictures – teaches words through interactive games and activities. • More Literacy Development: • Write in Blogs – students can create their own blog site or follow others on sites like BlogTopSites. • Threaded discussions at a distance – students can participate in discussions, improving their reading and writing using sites like Moddle or Edmodo. • Process Approach to Writing: • Concept mapping software– a great prewriting planning tool, for K-3 try Kidspirationand for grades 4 and up, try Webspiration. • Electronic publishing – use Google docs for a free word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and drawing program. Literacy • Productivity using a word processor • Besides the need to know how to use a word processor and take advantage of it’s features, how long you spend completing a type written assignment can be a barrier to a student’s success. • Have your students work with free software that can teach them how to type correctly and to increase their speed and accuracy. • A great free typing website is Typingweb.
