  1. English 10 - 10/3/11 • Which is more important “peace” or “equal rights and justice”? Listen to Peter Tosh’s song before you respond • Why is it important to be on-time for work if you're a computer security specialist? • Portmanteau word – A word formed by blending two or more other words; e.g. twist + whirl = twirl. Goals – Discuss equal rights and justice versus peace. Learn how to use the debatable issues handout. Moving debate Group practice with “Growing Up Digitally” article.. Homework – Do a brief free write on the intent of equal rights for everyone. Is it possible? Should we care about this issue in other countries?

Is online socializing harming people in some way? • The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese! • Pasimology– the art of speaking Goals – Walking debate; Growing up digital. Analyze virtual socializing. Homework – A brief free write that incorporates the ideas from our debate and today’s analysis. Are digital media harming us?

  3. English 10 - 10/5/11 • Should everyone vote? Do voters have a responsibility to be informed? • Why did Mr. Went go to the Masseuse? • Paronomasia – punning, a playing on words. Goals – Walking debate; Play Time Is Over. Vote or Die. Homework – A brief free write that incorporates the ideas from our debate and today’s analysis. What responsibilities does a voter have?

  4. English 10 - 10/6/11 • What is the difference between your opinions and a pro or con position for a statement of purpose? How will you keep your own views in check? • What does a pirate do when invited to a party? • Pathetic fallacy – Ascribing human passions to nature, cruel snows, caressing clouds, etc. Goals – Present argument and restate opponents’ argument. Academic controversy. Discuss personal opinions related to the issue. Homework – Don’t forget to study Vocabulary # 6 for quiz tomorrow. Write five conclusions of small groups from the debate to share in class tomorrow.

English 10 - 10/7/11 • Five minutes to study for Quiz #6. • Question: What type of specialist should you see if you have butterflies in your stomach? • Palindrome – a word or passage that reads the same forward or backwards. E.g. Dennis and Edna sinned. Goals – Complete Week 6 vocabulary study. Complete “Vote or Die” Academic Controversy. Homework – Select an issue that you think would be interesting to research and debate. Present on Monday.
