  2. ALL of the organisms in this lab belong in Domain Eukarya, then Kingdom Protista. • Protists are organisms that cannot be easily classified as bacteria, plants, animals, or fungi. • Protists can be microscopic (as these are) OR HUGE (as some seaweeds are). • Protists can be producers OR consumers.

  3. Dinoflagellates (p.74-76)

  4. 3. What phylum do dinoflagellates belong in? • 4. Some dinoflagellates use bioluminescence. What does this mean? • 5. How do most dinoflagellates obtain energy (food)? • 6. What type(s) of reproduction do most dinoflagellates use? • 7. Explain how a “red tide” forms. • 8. How is paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) related to dinoflagellates?

  5. Diatoms (p. 71-73)

  6. 3. What phylum do diatoms belong to? • 4. How do diatoms obtain energy (food)? • 5. What substance are the shells of diatoms composed of? • 6. What type(s) of reproduction do diatoms use? • 7. Name 3 things diatomaceous earth used for.

  7. Microscopes! • Draw Diatoms and Dinoflagellates AT HIGH POWER (Blue striped objective) on the paper provided • Drawings should be to scale! • Draw the organism so it fills the same amount of space in the circle as it does when you look at the view from the microscope eyepiece.
