  2. Books On Prescription: What is it? • 30 expert-endorsed self help books • Available in local public libraries in England from June 2013 • Aim to help people understand and manage common mental health conditions • Based on CBT • Supported by/ working within NICE guidelines

Books On Prescription: Key Partners • The Reading Agency & Society of Chief Librarians • Developed with and supported by: • Royal College of Psychiatrists, RCGPs & RCN • Department of Health IAPT Programme • British Psychological Society • BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) • MIND • Publicly Funded via Arts Council England • Coordinated by local library authorities • Working with GPs & mental health service providers

Books On Prescription: Development • Importance: ‘1 in 4’, 6 million, CBT, NICE endorsed • Systematic reviews, RCTs & metanalyses confirm self help effective (guided> unguided): effect sizes up to 0.84 v TAU/WL egChalder 1997, Lewis 2003, Frude 2006, Williams 2013, Farrand 2013) • First National Scheme for England: builds on local and Welsh schemes • Critical Friends Meetings 2012-13 (Independent, no conflict of interest, reviews of IAPT data, and book content mapping onto CBT, expert opinion across organisations, NICE concordant, long list, short list, reading age, style)

Which Books? • Included • Common conditions in adults • Self-help evidence base exists • Approved book is in print • Conditions included: • Anxiety (inc Stress & Worry) & Panic • Phobias (specific, social, agoraphobia) • Depression • Binge eating and Bulimia • Health anxiety • Chronic Pain & Chronic Fatigue • Low Self Esteem & Anger • Sleep problems & Relationship problems • Obsessions & Compulsions • Not Included • Evidence base insufficient • Unguided self help might be harmful • Carers, Children, LD (yet) • Conditions excluded: • Bipolar disorder • Psychosis/Schizophrenia • Anorexia • Autism/Asperger’s • PTSD & Abuse trauma • ‘Personality Disorder’ • ADHD • Dementia

Books On Prescription: How It Works • Direct access (library/online ) or Professional recommends (GP/IAPT worker, counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist, nurse) • Borrow book free from local library • ‘Prescription’ form available: adds to existing care (inc. self help advice, medication, referral) but does not replace it • Early intervention & Stepped care use: • At step 1 (recognition & education, unguided), or • Whilst waiting for CBT, or • With a professional (step 2 and above ie guided self help)
