Earth Vocabulary. sphere. Shaped like a ball or globe. Three dimensional circle. Example: Earth. Axis. A real or imaginary line through the center of a spinning object. Example: Earth rotates on an imaginary axis. Rotate. To turn around in place without traveling a distance.

  2. sphere • Shaped like a ball or globe. Three dimensional circle. • Example: Earth

  3. Axis • A real or imaginary line through the center of a spinning object. • Example: Earth rotates on an imaginary axis

  4. Rotate • To turn around in place without traveling a distance. • Example : Earth rotates on an axis that is tilted

  5. Revolve • To move around another object by traveling a distance. • Example: Earth revolves around the sun.

  6. Orbit • The path an object follows as it revolves around another object. Example: The Earth orbits the Sun.

  7. Why does the Earth have Seasons? • Earth’s tilted axis makes the Earth tilt a little as it revolves around the sun. This causes the sun to reach different parts of the earth four times a year.

  8. What causes the Earth to have Day and Night? • The rotation of the Earth on its axis causes the Earth to face toward the sun for 12 hours and away from the sun for another 12 hours. This gives us day and night.
