  1. 5th grade 5.8 Earth and SpaceVocabulary Cards

  2. Tornado a dark funnel of strong winds that spiral upward

  3. Climate The general weather of an area over a long period of time

  4. Temperate Climate • Moderate temperatures that change with the seasons

  5. Polar Climates • Cold and Dry

  6. Tropical Climates • Warm • Can be wet, dry, or somewhere in between

  7. Weather The condition of the atmosphere at a place for a short period of time

  8. Orbit The path an object takes as it moves around another object in space.

  9. Path The line along which something moves.

  10. Revolution (Revolve) One complete trip of a planet around the sun

  11. 1 year (365 days) • The time it takes Earth to make one revolution around the sun.

  12. Rotation (rotate) The spinning of a planet or moon on its axis

  13. 1 day (24 hours) • The time it takes Earth to make one complete rotation on its axis

  14. Solar System The sun and the objects that orbit around it.

  15. Planet A large object that orbits a star

  16. Inner Planets • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars

  17. Outer Planets • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune

  18. Dwarf Planet • Pluto

  19. Atmosphere The air that surrounds Earth

  20. Gravity • The force that pulls objects toward each other

  21. Weight • A measure of the pull of gravity on an object

  22. Mass • The amount of matter in an object or substance

  23. Sunspot • A cool spot on the sun’s surface that occurs for a short time

  24. Tide • Changes in water level at the shoreline that are caused by the pull of gravity between Earth and its moon

  25. Crater • A bowl-shaped structure at the top of a volcano or on a planet or moon

  26. Meteor • A streak of light made by a burning meteoroid in Earth’s atmosphere

  27. Meteorite • A meteoroid that strikes Earth’s or moon’s surface

  28. Water Cycle The change of water from one state to another as it moves between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere.

  29. Evaporation evaporation The process of changing from a liquid to a gas.

  30. Precipitation Precipitation Water that falls to the Earth’s surface as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

  31. Accumulation accumulation The collection of water, such as a stream, puddle or lake.

  32. Condensation To change from a gas to a liquid as the temperature decreases.

  33. Transpiration The release of water vapor into the air from a plant’s leaves

  34. Groundwater Water that collects underground in cracks and spaces in rock

  35. Lunar Cycle Phases of the moon

  36. Corona The outermost region of the sun's atmosphere; visible as a white halo during a solar eclipse

  37. Photosphere Visible surface of the Sun

  38. Solar Flares An eruption on the Sun’s surface

  39. Solar Wind A stream of charged particles from the sun

  40. Eclipse One object in space casting its shadow on another object in space
