Missing capabilities of existing initiatives as relates to Future Earth • Mapping the landscape to learn best practices • Research in transformational praxis • Capacity building in Transformation praxis • Capacity Building of academic researchers of Africa (Ourselves) to understand the Future Earth vision

Gaps and Needs for Future Earth • Integrated science • Ensuring that capacity building is integral and cross cutting among all future earth programmes • Platforms for sharing information - ICT • Looking at success stories • Use of joint degrees to be encouraged. • Isolated project vs. coupled/ consortium funding • Funders to target leadership building • Leadership training • Brain drain /gain • Mapping and assessment of who is doing what - future earth to fill identified gaps

New capabilities needed in context of Future Earth • Development of experts* who can work in trans disciplinary sectors • Science, policy research capacity • Science management • Enhancing community of practice (COP) • Need for up-scaling and out scaling • Need for integration • Monitoring effectiveness of policies • Influencing science and tech training- Educators • Capacity to collaborate • Knowledge mediation • Tool to monitor policy effectiveness • Communication skills

  8. Take Home Message Capacity Building is a long tern activity Possible role for FE in resource mobilization Success of Future Earth depends on systemic Capacity Development driven by Africans for Africans
