  2. HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO MOVE? WHERE WOULD YOU LIVE? HOW WOULD YOU GET THERE? WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

  3. Now….Imagine that YOU are a Portugal sailor living in the mid 1400s. You are so excited because you have heard about sailing to new lands and joining an expedition

  5. Can you think of 3 DANGERS that you might endure if you decide to go on this voyage?

  6. DANGER! • DANGER # 1: dangers endured crossing the Atlantic on boat (death, disease, ect.) • DANGER #2: Lack of food, shelter, etc • DANGER #3: Enemies? Who will they encounter once they get there

  7. WOULD YOU STAY OR WOULD YOU GO? 1. Many would takechance at religious freedom 2. freedom of persecution from government or better opportunities might entice them to go even though there are dangers

  8. WAS COLUMBUS THE FIRST TO FIND THE NEW WORLD?

  9. WHO WERE THE FIRST EUROPEANS TO MAKE CONTACT WITH NORTH AMERICA?

  10. THE VIKINGS

  11. WHO WERE THE VIKINGS? • PEOPLE THAT CAME FROM: Scandinavia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden • Used ships called longships the ship actually curved at both ends. • Founded Iceland and Greenland

  12. WHO WAS THERE? LIEF ERIKSON (SON OF ERIK THE RED)  In 1000, he was sailing west from Norway to Greenland when a strong wind storm blew his ship off course and carried his ship all the way to the North American Coast

  13. A couple hundred years later in PORTUGAL in the 1400sHenry the NavigatorHe ended up building an observatory and founded a school of navigation to teach better methods of sailing. He also PAID for expeditions to explore the west coast of Africa.

  14. One example of the innovations was a very special ship called the caravel it became the work-horse of many European sailors.

  15. WHY WOULD EUROPEANS WANT TO EXPLORE UNCHARTERED TERRITORY? 1. ASIAN SPICES. 2. They wanted to be able to by spices and other goods directly and bypass the merchants 3. Christians in Europe wanted to convert more people to their faith 4. Many Europeans had become interested in Asian culture. 5.FIND NEW TRADE ROUTES

  17. Another Portuguese explorer named Vasco de Gama also made many explorations!

  19. CAUSES OF THE DISCOVERY OF A SEA ROUTE TO ASIA 1. Financial backing from Prince Henry the Navigator 2. Technology (caravel and mariner’s astrolabe) 3. Trade with Asia and financial gain 4. Converting people to Christianity 5. Curiosity

  20. EFFECTS OF THE DISCOVERY OF A SEA ROUTE TO ASIA 1. Discovery of a sea route to Asia 2. Face-to-face contact with traders in distant lands 3. Awareness of different cultures and ways of life

I can list some major RESULTS of Portugal’s explorations. #1 Start of the Atlantic Slave Trade #2 Sailors negotiated for gold, ivory and slaves #3 Slave trade devastated African communities #4 Led to increase warfare among kingdoms and broke up many families #5 Brought much wealth to Portugal
