  3. How does the text work? • Imperative language is instructional language that commands you to act. Identify the examples of imperative language in the poem. • What is the impact of the imperative language?

  4. Tone • Tone is the emotion or attitude of the voice or words themselves. The tone is the writer’s attitude to their subject. Texts can have a positive, neutral or negative tone. Words that describe tone are optimistic, pessimistic, critical, cynical, enthusiastic. • Describe the tone of The Door, using one example from the poem to support your response.

Modality • Modality refers to the degree of certainty or probability, likelihood. • Words such as certainly/ definitely have high modality, whereas words such as sometimes, perhaps, usually are lower on the modality scale. • Identify one low modality word in the poem.
