Kakadu National Park • The Kakadu National Park is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. • it is ¾’s of Tasmania.Kakadu is ecologically and biologically diverse. • The main natural features protected with in the National Park includes : Four major river systems which includes the East,West and South Alligator Rivers, six major landforms which includes the floodplains,lowlandsand the stone country,and a remarkable variety of wildlife for example,over 280 bird species, over 1600 plant species and over 10 000 insects.

Kakadu National Park • Kakadu was established at a time when the Australian community was becoming more interested in the declaration of national parks for conversation and in recognizing the land interests of Aboriginal people. • The Aboriginal traditional owners of the Park are descendants of various clan groups from the Kakadu area. • Approximately 500 Aboriginal people live in the park.

Kakadu National Park • The cultural and natural values of the park were recognized internationally when the park was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. • Approximately half of the land in Kakadu is Aboriginal land under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and most of the remaining land is currently under claim by Aboriginal people.

The Flora in the Kakadu National Park • Kakadu’s Flora is among the richest in Northern Australia with more than 1700 plant species recorded which is a result of the park’s geological,landform and habitat diversity. • Kakadu is also the national park in the world not to have weed. • The different areas of Kakadu have their own specialised flora.The southern hills and basins support several found plants that are only found in Kakadu such as Eucalyptus.

  6. The Flora • Lowland areas form a large proportion of Kakadu National Park and are mainly covered in eucalypt-dominated open woodland with the ground layer consisting of a large range of grasses. • On the tidal flats behind the mangroves, hardy succulents,grasses and sedges grow. • The forests contains several impressive trees for example,the kapok tree,which has a spiny trunk,large,waxy red flowers and pods full of cotton like material.

  7. The Native Fauna in the Kakadu National Park • The diverse environments of Kakadu National Park support a surprise of animals. • Some of the animals in the Park are rare, endangered, physical or are regularly found. • To the extreme weather conditions experienced in the park,many animals are active in certain times of the day,night or any particular times of the year. • There has been 74 species recorded in the park e.g marsupials and placental mammals.Most of them live in the open forest and woodlands,which makes it difficult to see them.

  8. The Native Fauna • There has been 117 species of reptiles recorded in Kakadu. • Reptiles such as large goannas,King Brown snakes, Death Adders and many other are now rare in the Park. • There has also been 53 different type of fish species recorded in Kakadu. • The insect groups in the over 10,000 species of insects are grasshoppers,beetles,flies,termites, butterflies,moths,bees,wasps and ants.
