Spring 2012: Chemistry 2 (84.122) Enrollment in a Thursday Lecture, a MWF Recitation, and a lab section, 84.124, are required Required materials: • Textbook: “Chemistry, A Molecular Approach”, 2nd Edition, Nivaldo J. Tro, Prentice Hall, 2011. ISBN 0-321-65178-2 • Mastering Chemistry access for on-line homework • Scientific calculator • Turning Technologies Clicker for class participation • A Periodic table: COPY the one in the book or get one from the web, you will need this for quizzes Optional materials:Student study/answer guide

We will cover ten Chapters 17,11-16, 18, 19, 20Note that the order is not SEQUENTIAL Chapter 17: Free Energy & Thermodynamics Chapter 11: Liquids, Solids & Intermolecular Forces Chapter 12: Solutions Chapter 13: Chemical Kinetics Chapter 14: Chemical Equilibrium Chapter 15: Acids & Bases Chapter 16: Aqueous Ionic Equilibrium Chapter 18: Electrochemistry Chapter 19: Nuclear Chemistry Chapter 20: Organic Chemistry

  5. Quizzes and Exams • There will be a quiz every Thursday during your Lecture Section. Your two lowest quiz grades will be dropped • No cell phones, smart phones, iphones, ipads, computers, or other communication devices are allowed during quizzes & exams • Single question pop quizzes are possible throughout the week • There will be no make-ups for quizzes • There will be a comprehensive final exam, the date and time of which, will be announced later in the semester

  6. Homework All homework is done online using the website masteringchemistry.com. An access code is included in the textbook bundle purchased at the north bookstore. If you purchase a used book, you will need to purchase an access code separately from the north bookstore. • Homework assignments will be assigned for each chapter and will be due typically 7 to 10 days after the assignment has been posted. • You will have a minimum of 3 hours of homework per chapter!

  7. Communications • Most important information regarding assignments, quizzes, grades, etc. will be announced by email and in class • If you do not use your university email account, you need to provide me with an active account for communication purposes • I maintain a wikispace on which I post lecture slides, grades, quiz answer keys, etc. • You will receive an email invitation to join using your university email for registration • I will also open a blackboard account for the 1st time to determine which system is superior from your and my perspectives

  8. Grading Course grade is based upon the following formula: • 40% quizzes • 30% homework • 5% class participation • 25% final exam There will be no extra credit or other class assignments that will be used for the calculation of a grade. The grading will be based on: A >94%, A- 90-93%, B+ 87-89%, B 83-86%, B- 80-82%, C+ 77-79%, C 73-76%, C- 70-72%, D+ 66-69%, D 60-65%, F <60%

  9. Mathematics • Chemistry 2 is math intensive. • You are encouraged to review logs, natural logs, use of the quadratic equation, significant figures, use of conversion factors, etc.

  10. TO SUCEED IN CHEMISTRY 2 • READ THE CHAPTER THOROUGHLY • REREAD CHAPTER AND OUTLINE KEY POINTS • WORK THROUGH SOLVED CHAPTER EXAMPLES • DO ODD # END-OF-CHAPTER PROBLEMS AND CHECK YOUR ANSWERS IN THE BOOK’S ANSWER KEY • DO THE HOMEWORK (a gift that if used wisely, given the unlimited attempts policy, it will bring up your final grade) • PLAN ON A 10 HOUR PER WEEK COMMITMENT FOR THIS COURSE, MINIMUM • TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CHEMISTRY TUTORING CENTER IN OLNEY 407. IT IS STAFFED BY upper division CHEM MAJORS AND BY SOME PROFESSORS
