  3. Raising the Participation Age You will have to remain in learning until the end of the academic year in which you turn 18 • Education • Training including apprenticeships • Employment incorporating learning

  4. EducationOver 90% of Collingwood Year 11s will remain in full-time education • Free until the age of 19 • Some careers require higher qualifications • Different styles of learning • Different types of educational providers • Maths/English GCSEs or equivalent – new requirement

  5. Things to consider… • Apply by Christmas. • Apply to two or three places - back-up plan. • Popular courses over subscribed - early application. • Travel – cost/time • Courses available – online prospectus + careers library + www.ucasprogress.com

  6. What else should you be doing now? • Talk to people about career ideas • Get hold of college prospectuses • Go to open evenings/days • Use www.u-explore.com and Careers section of VLE • Book an appointment with Mr Woolford or drop-in to Careers Department

  7. Tips for writing college applications…if not online • Neat and tidy • Instructions(black ink/CAPITALS) • Answer all questions fully • Personal statement • Check closing deadlines • Enter predicted grades from progress report

  10. The Apprenticeship Programme Each Apprenticeship programme will include some or all of these components: Components of a framework Vocational Award (NVQ) Functional or Key Skills Technical Certificate Employment Rights & Responsibilities

  11. Employment • Stay in some form of learning until 18 • CV • Covering letter/email • Application forms • Job search – web-sites, recruitment agencies • Labour market information – salaries, growing industry sectors, where are the jobs? • Interview skills

To summarise • Start thinking about your options for after Year 11 now. • Your options are: • Staying on in education • Training (apprenticeships & traineeships) • Employment (including learning) • Talk to friends, family, Teachers, Form Tutors and Mr Woolford so that you can make an informed decision.
