  1. MEDC, Developed, First World, Rich World Development – Do we have enough food for everyone? LEDC, Developing, Third World, Poor

  2. The Game

  3. % of world’s food related to population

  4. Dividing up the class (don’t show the group until afterwards)

  5. Some questions answered.

  6. Q. Does the world produce enough food to feed all the people well? • A: Yes. Enough grain is grown to provide each person with 10 loaves of bread every day.

  7. Q. We grow more than enough grain to feed everyone in the world. Why do the poorest not get any? A. We use over 50% of it to feed animals and fatten them up for slaughter. To produce 1lb of beef you need to feed the cow 5lb of grain.

  8. Q. Why don’t the poorer farmers in LEDC’s use fertilisers and pesticides to help them grow better crops? A. They can’t afford them. 85% of the world fertilizer is used by Western Europe and North America.

  9. Q. Did the USA really dump 8 million tonnes of grain into the sea recently? A. Yes they did! They produced too much and to prevent the prices falling and losing money, they dumped it at sea. Q. Why didn’t they ship it to the poorest people? A. They say it is too expensive to transport.

  10. Q. Why do many countries that can’t feed their own people export millions of tons of cash crops (tea, pineapples, peanuts) every year? A. Multinational companies can control some of the best land in LEDC’s and can dictate what to grow.

  11. ‘Food supplies are not equal around the world’.Complete a piece of writing about this title. • Find examples of countries where food supply is a real problem e.g. Ethiopia in Africa. • Why do people there have less food than we do in France? • Can you find out about why people can eat so much food in the USA? • What things can stop people from getting food?
