HMT QPE and DMIP 2Mike Smith, David Kitzmiller, Feng Ding, Ziya Zhang, John Schaake, Victor Koren, Fekadu Moreda, Shane Sheldon, Pete Fickenscher, Eric Strem, Dave Kingsmill, Sergei Matrasov, Dave Jorgenson • Initial DMIP 2 experiment for 1987-2002 using gauge only QPE • “Can distributed models be run now with existing forcings?” • NCDC hourly, daily and SNOTEL daily data used to derive hourly 4km grid QPE • Results show cases of improvement using OHD distributed model compared to lumped model • 6 groups submitted simulations with distributed models; analysis pending • OHD distributed modeling results with 2005-2006 HMT Radar QPE • Processed using MPE (no PRISM) and 12 NCDC hourly gauges • 4 cases: MPE gauge only, OHD gauge only, KDAX and MPE, and XPOL/SmartR and MPE • Little value added by radar QPE • 12 hourly gauges may be sufficient in this case • Perform ‘gauge data denial’ experiments with MPE to represent basins with sparse data networks • Make data available to DMIP 2 participants • OHD ‘basic’ gauge-only data suspect after 2003 • Difficult to identify ‘best’ QPE due to short period 3 month period • Analysis of 2006/2007 HMT QPE: pending • Freezing level DMIP 2 experiments: pending
