  1. “Our goal is to empower the student body to make a difference in the environment by recycling batteries.” -R4E Team

  2. Why recycle Batteries? • Because of the effect of their components when released into the environment: • Mercury- toxic to the human nervous system. Chronic breathing of mercury vapors can cause a range of physical symptoms, including inability to coordinate body movement and impairment of hearing, speech and vision.  • Cadmium- Cadmium exposure has been linked with kidney disease. • Zinc-Consuming just 50 to 100 milligrams per day can cause copper deficiency, which leads to anemia and other ills. Taking in more than 150 milligrams a day can lead to dizziness, lethargy and problems with muscle coordination.

  3. “Our alkaline batteries are composed primarily of common metals—steel, zinc, and manganese” -Duracell

  4. How are these toxic metals released? • Mainly improper handling and disposal of batteries: • Leeching • Burning • Corroding

  5. How we plan to prevent this? • Well, by educating of course. We will inform our fellow students and teachers of the health risks associated with improperly disposing batteries. • We will provide drop-off locations for students, and will encourage them to bring their batteries • Once collected and separated (per R4E members and others) we will take the batteries to a nearby recycling facility, where they will be properly handled.

  6. Where Does PTK come in? • Simple, as a student organized program “R4E battery recycling” will need a house; additional students and faculty to help run the program, specially when we graduate. (won’t be anytime soon)
