  1. SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES USAWILDWATER

  2. Wildwater is a race against the clock conducted on free flowing whitewater rivers. Athletes are free to choose their own descent path down the river depending on their risk taking capacity and fitness level. Raw time from the start to the finish line determines the winner. Three types of competition are raced: The CLASSIC race is a long race lasting from 15 to 25 minutes on one continuous stretch of whitewater river. The SPRINT race is normally done on a very hard rapid or series of very hard rapids. The race will last from 60 to 180 seconds. The TEAM race has three competitors from the same country leaving the start at the same time and working together to get to the finish as fast as possible. Racers must cross all timing stations and the finish line within 15 seconds of each other The first Wildwater World Championships were held in 1949 in France and have been held every two years since then. The World Cups are a series of six races and are held every year. Wildwater is raced in one person kayaks (K1), one person canoes (C1) and two person canoes (C2). Men race in all three classes. Women only race in K1. All classes and genders are raced at the senior and junior levels. 7. Hours of Training A typical USA Wildwater Team athlete spends 1200 hours in their boat each year (not including the hundreds of additional hours in the weight room, running, and of video analysis).  That equates to more than 30 hours a week in a 50 week year. Training is a full time job!! Miles and Miles Traveled Our National Team athletes fly an average of 20,000 miles per year for training and competition in the US and abroad. This excludes the 1000’s of miles driven to competitions and to community service related events that they are active in throughout the year. To compete in the U.S. Trials, World Championships, World Cups and National Championships requires Team members to make two trips to competitions in Europe and two within the USA. Equipment Wildwater boats (athletes typically need 1 per year) cost more than $1500, paddles run approximately $300 each (of which they will need 2 per year) and competition gear (jackets, spray skirts, etc) cost hundreds more per year.
