  1. Quaestio:Was the Republic closer to monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy?NuncAgenda:Review your answers on the Founding Myths of Rome with your partner and make sure they are all correct. We will discuss as a class in a few minutes.

Quaestio:Was the Republic closer to monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy?NuncAgenda:According to the Greek historian Polybius: “…it was impossible even for the Romans themselves to declare with certainty whether the whole system was an aristocracy, a democracy or a monarchy.” Define each of these three forms of government.

Roman Government • Part I: Working in groups, read the documents and examine the accompanying graphics or sources, and create questions for other students that could be answered to help them learn about the topic. Make sure they are more than just repeating information. Challenge them to think. • Part II: Students will switch groups and try to answer the questions of the original groups. • Part III: Class will review the questions and discuss which questions were most helpful to understanding. We will also discuss the three aspects of the Roman Republic.

The Republic:• Examine all three readings on the Republic and complete the questions YOU MADE!• You will work in new groups made up of at least one member of your groups from yesterday.• Start by reviewing the questions for your original reading, and annotate the reading to help you teach your group members.• Work together to answer the questions for each reading. The “expert” for each reading will lead the discussion of that reading for the group

Think Pair Share:• Take two minutes to reflect on the Quaestio, “Was the Republic closer to monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy?,” and try to write down one example of each • With your partner, take three minutes to share your thoughts and come up with an example for each form of government• As a class, we will discuss the Quaestio, share our examples, and try to come to a conclusion
