  1. Modelling at KS1 Thursday 2nd March Rowen Pickavance rpickavance@cardiff.gov.uk

  2. Modelling – A definition • Modelling is defined as the ability to use IT to simulate real or imaginary situations, and to explore and develop such situations. It allows them to ask ‘what if’ questions to help them understand the underlying rules of a situation.

  3. The National Curriculum Modelling Key Stage 1 Use ICT-based models and simulations to try things out and explore aspects of real or imaginary situations eg: use a mouse to move items of clothing displayed on the screen to dress a child or teddy bear, use an adventure game. Key Stage 2 • explore the effect of changing variables in simulations and similar packages, to ask and answer questions of the ‘What would happen if...?’ type,e.g. change the values in a given Logo procedure and see the results • recognise patterns and relationships in the results obtained from ICT-based models or simulations, predicting the outcomes of different decisions that could be made, eg: use a prepared spreadsheet to enter sales, income and payments to the school tuck shop and produce a short report to identify sales for each item and how changes could improve profitability, use a mathematical adventure game.

  4. ACCE Modelling Scheme for KS1 • Split into two parts: • Using models/logo • Using adventure/simulations

  5. ACCE Modelling Scheme for KS2 • Split into three parts: • Using models • Using adventure/simulations • Spreadsheets

  6. Why is Modelling important? Helps children develop problem solving skills. Helps children develop thinking skills. Using models: Encourages children to realise that computers are programmed by humans. Encourages children to collaborate. Helps children develop decision making skills. Allows children to experience situations which for various reasons they would otherwise not be able to. Encourages children to persevere with a task over an extended period of time. The National Curriculum orders require it! Using models: Allows children to appreciate mistakes and start self assessment. Allows children to access other areas of curriculum – children are natural modellers. Helps children see relationships between cause and effect.

  7. ACCE Modelling Scheme http://acce.cardiffschools.net • Select ‘IT/ICT’ from the menu on the left. • Select ‘Primary IT’ from the top. • Select ACCE IT Scheme of work • Scroll down to unit 10 – ‘Modelling’ and select.
