Handwriting • Neat handwriting is important as it can promote a fluent writing style, this does not necessarily lead to high quality writing and only makes up a small part of the assessment of your child • Year 1 – children learn cursive handwriting • Correct letter formation and pencil grip is essential • Children can experiment with handwriting styles as they progress

Spelling and punctuation • Letters and Sounds: • Foundation stage – basic code • Year 1 – advanced code • Spelling lists and investigations • Speech can influence spelling • Progression in punctuation: • Full stops and capital letters • Commas in lists – commas to extend sentences • Question & exclamation marks • Begin to use speech punctuation

Text types covered in year 1/2 • Stories with familiar settings • Stories from a range of cultures • Traditional and fairy tales (including plays) • Stories about fantasy worlds • Labels, lists and captions • Instructions • Recounts, dictionary • Information • Using the senses • Pattern and rhyme • Poems on a theme • Different stories by the same authors • Extended stories / significant authors • Explanations • Non-chronological reports • Poetry • Additional writing occurs frequently when opportunities arise such as snow, visitors, planning events, theme based e.g. dinosaurs, on the farm

Supporting your child at home • Writing for a purpose: • Thank you cards • Postcards • Invitations • Letter to relatives • Lists for shopping etc • Recount of an event • Writing about hobbies and interests • Posters • Role play • Diary • Different formats: • ICT • Writing frames – free from internet • Coloured pens and paper • Notebooks
