  1. SSD Operations August 20, 2007 H. Matis for the SSD group H. Matis

  2. Key Active People this Year • France • Christophe Renard • Stephane Bouvier • Gerard Guilloux • Jonathan Bouchet • Artemious Geromitsos • Jerome Baudot • David Bonnet • US • Michael LeVine • Jim Thomas • Vi Nham Tram • Howard Matis • Poland • Jacek Plebanek • Radoslaw Pieniazek I hope I have not left someone out H. Matis

  3. SSD Timetable H. Matis

  4. Tasks • QA, filtering, calibration • Repair and maintenance • Upgrade cooling • L2 • Readout upgrade • Slow controls • Runtime operations • Reinstallation • QA monitoring H. Matis

  5. QA, filtering, calibration(urgency 1 - now) • Tasks • Run filtering • HV shifts • Alignment • Cluster detection • People • Jonathan (graduating) • Artemious • Jacek • Radoslaw • Need post doc leading this effort • Continuity when detector is used again • To do (when detector is reinstalled) • Improve QA information so that they are easy to understand H. Matis

  6. Repair and Maintenance(urgency 1 - now) • Several ladders are broken • Ladders need to be checked and broken ones repaired • Repairs must be done at Nantes • People • Stephane • Help from Michael, Jim, and I • To do • Create a test bench at BNL for inspection • Need BNL tech - 20% FTE to learn system, diagnose and repair • Assemble parts inventory • CAEN power supply “flakey” • Repair or spares - lower priority H. Matis

  7. Upgrade Cooling(urgency 2) • Scenario I – October 1 • 1/4 FTE designer for new cooling system • Transfer SVT slow controls system to SSD • Slow control group • Install cooling interlocks • Scenario 2 - Next year • Cooling done as part of HFT installation • Need to relate slow control interface to SSD interlocks H. Matis

  8. SSD Readout Upgrade(urgency: 2 start 11/2007) • Upgrade electronics Design of new readout • Must be sensitive to DAQ1000 • STAR needs to define triggering requirements • Personal for upgrade • Christophe (Nantes) 0.75 FTE-yr • Michael 0.5 FTE-yr • Digital electronics engineer (BNL - TBD) 0.75 FTE-yr • Software to decode new data format • Michael L. 0.1 FTE-yr H. Matis

  9. L2 upgrade and fix(urgency: 2 Implemented before DAQ occupied with data taking) • SSD crashes with L2 trigger • Large amount of data needlessly sent to be compatible with existing code • Only needed for scenario 1 • People • Michael - 2 months • Christophe • STAR DAQ person for diagnosis H. Matis

  10. New SSD-specific slow controls(urgency: 2 start 3/2008) • Replace EPICS/VxWorks with Linux version • Can no longer support SUN-based system • New presentation required for new readout architecture • David Bonnet did excellent job in pass • Need new 1 scientist FTE-yr (TBD) [both tasks] H. Matis

  11. Runtime Operations(urgency: 2 start 8/2008 or 9/2009) • Run 7 - 3 people/week - 2 FTE/week • Run 7 crew • Michael, Jim, Vi Nham • Jonathan, Artemious • Jerome (in France) • Did not train “super” expert • Need one leader for the runtime operations group • Knows all whims of the detector • Resident at BNL H. Matis

  12. Reinstallation(urgency: 2 start 8/2008 or 8/2009) • Reinstall detector and test - One month • Installation • Stephane • Gerard • BNL Tech • Testing • Christophe • Train runtime crew H. Matis

  13. QA monitoring(urgency: 2 start 8/2008 or 8/2009) • Need instantaneous online monitoring • Helps to understand the SSD behavior (HV, reboot of the Slow Control…) • And to take action if needed • Need to revisit the current plots (less but relevant): • 2D occupancy plot • (#SSD hits/#global tracks) distribution • SSD hit vs. phi • Plots for shift crew or SSD expert • QA did not work well in Run7 • Need real-time monitoring • Implementation : 1 FTE for ~1 month H. Matis

  14. To do Scenario I or 2?(urgency 2 - decision by January 2008) • Does the SSD hurt or help the low mass run? • Does it separate non-photonic electronics from background? • SSD is used to calibrate the TPC • How important is this? • Need analysis by working groups of pros and cons of having it in • Installation and cone design • Path of upgrades • Is upgrade funding available • Longer the SSD out, the more institutional memory lost • Decision needs to made by management by say January 31, 2008 H. Matis

  15. Homework for SSD Group (urgency 1 - Completed by October 2007) • Need to write short proposal • Jim and I • Describe in detail how to update SSD • Memorandum of Understanding • Michael and Stephane (Christophe) • Between STAR and SUBATECH • Formally establish collaboration in DAQ1000 era H. Matis

  16. Summary • This year assembled a good team • Strong support from the French • Need to transfer center of gravity of support to North America • significant training and a “Blair” for the detector • STAR management must establish when the SSD will be reinstalled • Establish formal structure for the group with institutional responsibilities • Upgrade path must be specified • Need money, engineering and tech support • Many key personal are graduate students, postdocs • French support will not increase • Need to identify positions and funding for hire • Excellent project for small university group to join and provide significant contribution • Any volunteers? H. Matis
