  2. What is Parkinson’s Disease? • second most common neurodegenerative disorder • progressive loss of muscle control • trembling of the limbs and head while at rest • stiffness, slowness, and impaired balance. • may become difficult to walk, talk, and complete simple tasks.

  3. What causes PD? degenerative disorder of the CNS SubstantiaNigra (SN) controls movement Cells die in SN (pars compacta) stops producing Dopamine Loss in muscle control Thalamus and Globus PalidusInterna became overly active

  4. Primary Symptoms • Tremor at rest • Bradykinesia • Impaired balance and coordination • Muscle rigidity • Stooped posture • Expressionless face • Decreased sense of smell

  5. Problems with advancing Parkinson’s Disease • Constipation • Urinary problems • Orthostatic hypotension • Dysphagia • Excessive salivation • Pains • Autonomic Impairment • Motor complications • Dyskinesia • No response • Dystonia

  6. Classifications • Idiopathic • Acquired • Hereditary parkinsonism • Parkinson plus syndrome

  7. Treatment • Drug treatment (levodopa, dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors) • Therapy (occupational, speech and language, physiotherapy) • Surgery- Deep brain stimulation
