  2. Villages grow into cities • Inventions • Hoes • Sickles • Plow sticks • Irrigation

  3. Population growth • As food supply increases so does population • People live longer • Women are healthier • Babies are healthier

  4. Economic and Social Changes • Trade develops over land and over seas • People start performing other jobs • Social groups develop out of job diversification • Religion develops out of explanation for nature and farming

  5. Civilization • 1) Advanced cities • 2) Specialized workers • 3) Complex institutions • 4) Record keeping • 5) Advanced technology

  6. Advanced cities and specialization of workers • Cities become centers for trade • Workers take on different jobs i.e. workers, government officials, religious leaders • Artisans develop= skilled workers who make goods be hand

  7. Complex institutions and Record keeping • Government develops to make laws to live by • Religion becomes a formal institution • To keep track of laws and records for trading record keeping put in place and written language • Scribes= professional record keepers and teachers

  8. Improved Technology • New tools and techniques used to solve problems • Ox-drawn plows • Irrigation • 3500 B.C. potters wheel by the Sumerians • 2500 B.C. Sumerians melt copper and tin to produce bronze which makes tools move from stone to bronze and results in the Bronze Age
