  5. Finding what you need Finding what you need on your topic often stems from three things: • Finding good keywords for your searches • Cycling your search • Selecting the right search tools for the job IAT 103W: research workshop

  6. Finding good keywords Finding what you need on your topic often stems from three things: • Finding good keywords for your searches • Cycling your search • Selecting the right search tools for the job All of our examples today will be related to 3D printers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/creative_tools/9604003269/ Can you think of any synonyms or related concepts? 9. Selecting the right tools Two questions on 3-D printers that I want to find the answers to: • What materials are used in 3-D printers for the actual printing? • Is it legal to print a gun with a 3-D printer in Canada? Spend 2-3 min. brainstorming places where you might find the answers to these questions. (Tip: “Google” isn’t a possible answer here.) IAT 103W: research workshop

  10. Selecting the right tools scholarly articles specialized information S specificity background information credibility very credible not credible IAT 103W: research workshop

  11. Selecting the right tools Every tool is designed for a different function. What were each of these three different tools designed to do? IAT 103W: research workshop

  12. Selecting the right tools Every tool is designed for a different function. What were each of these three different tools designed to do? Always access it through SFU Library; otherwise you’ll be asked to pay for articles IAT 103W: research workshop

  14. Selecting the right tools Fast Search Library Search SFU Library’s Russian dolls Catalogue http://www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegall/288377539/ IAT 103W: research workshop

  15. Selecting the right tools Spoiler alert: This is one of the tools you will explore for your research project. Fast Search Library Search Catalogue http://www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegall/288377539/ IAT 103W: research workshop

  16. Selecting the right tools Fast Search Library Search Tip: In most resources, you can add items to a folder and email them to yourself. Many will even email you APA citations. Demo in Fast Search. Catalogue http://www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegall/288377539/ IAT 103W: research workshop

  17. Selecting the right tools The library has hundreds of databases, each of them designed for a (sometimes slightly) different function. The main types: • subject-specific databases (+ indexes) • multidisciplinary databases (+ indexes) (Examples of both types are listed on the IAT 103 guide.) Some advice on picking the right one for your topic. IAT 103W: research workshop

  18. Creative thinking When you begin doing research, some of you will run into difficulties finding credible sources on your exact topic. You will need to think creatively. IAT 103W: research workshop

  19. Creative thinking You will need to think creatively. What if I couldn’t find any credible sources to help directly answer this question: How does a 3-D printer relate to larger issues (cultural, social, political, global) in the world? IAT 103W: research workshop

  20. Evaluating sources Are either of the articles on your handout scholarly? How can you tell? IAT 103W: research workshop
