  2. Phrasal verbs • Phrasal verbs are verbs which are followed by one or more particles. Looking forward to, look up, run out of • Phrasal verbs can be: • Literal – They keep the same meaning of the verb • When the bell rang all the kids ran out of the classroom and left school. • Idiomatic – They change the meaning of the original verb. Oh no! we run out of gas and the nearest gas station is five miles from here!

  3. PHRASAL VERBS • Meanings • Come up with create or produce • Come across find by accident • Look forward to to anticipate with pleasure • Look up try to find information in a book • Put up with tolerate • Run out of to finish • Take off to leave the ground (airplane)

  4. PHRASAL VERBS • Phrasal verbs can be: • Separable –They can be separated • Example: put off – put the meeting off • put off the meeting • put it off • never: put off it

  5. PHRASAL VERBS • Phrasal verbs can be: • Inseparable –They cannot be separated • Example: come across • I came across some pictures. • I came across them. • Never: I came some pictures across.
