TheFoodStandardsandSafetyAuthorityofIndia(FSSAI)isresponsibleforregulatingandTheFoodStandardsandSafetyAuthorityofIndia(FSSAI)isresponsibleforregulatingand supervisingthefoodsafety.ObtainingaFSSAIcertificatehasnowbecomemandatoryforall manufacturers,traders,restaurantsandallthoseinvolvedinfoodbusiness,commonly knownasFoodBusinessOperators(FBOs).ItismandatoryforalltheFoodBusiness Operators(FBOs)inordertoobtainafoodservicelicense. ThemisunderstandingorconfusionwhichisamongtheFBOsisthelicensewhichthe businessmanisrequiredtoobtain.TheFSSAIworkstowardsettingscientificstandardsfor articlesoffood,toregulatetheirmanufacturing,storage,distribution,sales,andimport.It ismandatoryforanystartuporcompanywithaplantoenterthefoodretailbusinesstoget anFSSAIlicense.ThisisstartedbytheGovernmentofIndiatoensurethefoodproduced, distributedorimportedsetbythefoodauthorityandtherebyavoidproblemssuchas adulterationandinferiorqualitiesoffood. Thisarticlefocusonthedifferenttypesoffoodhandlerslicensewhichisissuedbythe authority. InFSSAItherearethreedifferenttypesoffoodlicenses: 1.CentralLicenseforenterpriseswithaturnoverofoverRs.20lacs 2.StateLicenseforsingle-statehotels,restaurants,andmedium-sizedfood manufacturerswithannualturnoverofRs.12lacstoRs.20lacs 3.BasicRegistrationforsingle-statebusinesseswithannualturnoverofunderRs.12 lacs FSSAILicenseApplicableto: AspernewFSSARules,2011allexistingandnewFoodBusinessOperators(FBO)hasto mandatoryconverttheirexistingPFA,FPO,MMPOLicensestonewFSSALicense.Itis mandatorytoobtainFSSAILicensebefore Thethreelicenses,however,differonthebasisofthescaleofoperationofthefood businesswhichisbeingcarriedout.Thefollowingisthedetailedinformationonthethree foodlicenses.

  3. 1.CentralLicense:Centralfoodlicenseobtainingunderfoodbusinessoperatorssuch1.CentralLicense:Centralfoodlicenseobtainingunderfoodbusinessoperatorssuch astheImporters,ExportOrientedUnits,largemanufacturers,operatorsin theCentralGovernmentagencies,airports,seaportsetc.TheCentrallicenseis issuedbytheCentralGovernment. 2.StateLicense:FBO’slikesmalltomediumsizedmanufacturers,storageunits, transporters,retailers,marketers,distributorsetc.arehoweverneedtoobtainthe FssaiStateLicense.ThisLicenseisissuedbytheStateGovernmentandinonly1 state. 3.BasicRegistration:TheFoodbusinessoperatorslikepettyfoodmanufacturersand alsothesmall-sizedmanufacturers,storageunits,transporters,retailers,marketers, distributorsetcarethusrequiredtoobtaintheFSSAIRegistration.TheFSSAI RegistrationishoweverissuedbytheStateGovernment.
