  2. Characters • Darby- A third grade 9 year old girl who writes for the Bennettsville times. She's brave and smart and has a best friend named Evette. • Evette- Evette is a black girl who is really smart and is best friends with Darby. Evette is a tenant farmer. A tenant farmer is a person who lives and works on someone's property • Beth- Beth go’s to Murchison school with her best friend Darby. • McCall- McCall is Darby’s older brother. • Great Uncle Harvey- Great Uncle Harvey is Darby’s Great uncle and is blind. When Great Uncle Harvey was a kid he got the measles and the measles made him go blind. But Great Uncle Harvey has great hearing.

  3. Settings • Darby’s house • Murchison school • The woods • Mr.Salters office • Carmichael Dry Goods

  4. Problem • Blacks aren't being treated fairly in Marlboro County. The Klu Klux Klan wants' to make it worse by throwing bricks into peoples houses and stores. Also by burning crosses on peoples property. • The Klu Klux Klan are a group of people who believe that whites are better than blacks. They also believe that lacks can’t do as much as whites.

  5. Solution • The Klu Klux Klan still exists. Darby writes an article about how blacks aren’t being treated fairly. After a little while the people start to change their mind about her article and blacks.

  6. How I liked it • I thought it was an o.k. book. Not the best book I read But better than the Harriet Tubman Battle book. • I would rate this book • It had some bad parts, boring parts, and good parts.
