  2. Simple Sentence • Contains one independent clause • Has no subordinate clause

  4. Compound Sentence • Contains two or more independent clauses • Has no subordinate clause • Joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction • And, but, for, nor, or, so, yet • Joined by a semi colon (;)

  5. Examples of Compound Sentences • No one was injured in the fire, but several homes were destroyed. • Fruits and vegetables should be part of everyone’s diet, for they supply many important vitamins.

  6. Complex Sentence • Contains one independent clause • Contains at least one subordinate clause

  7. Examples of Complex Sentences • When I hear classical music, I think of the Madrid Middle School band. • Mrs. Aguayo, who used to teach at Payne School, is in Room 22. • Joseph did not play soccer yesterday because he sprained his ankle in practice.
