  1. Program Update Tuesday, March 24, 2009

  2. Agenda • Budget Overview • 2008 Fall Fling Recap • New Indoor Skills Program a Success • State of our Playing Fields • Move to Framingham State College • Volunteer Opportunities • CORI Checks • AED Donation • HYL Annual Meeting - Election of Officers for 2010 • HYL Night at the Boston Cannons - May 16, 2009 • NCAA Lacrosse Finals - May 23 - 25, 2009 at Gillette • MBYLL Jamboree – June 13, 14, 20 & 21

  3. Budget Overview

  4. How Do We Improve? • In New England, lacrosse is an indoor and an outdoor sport, or you do not compete. • Cannot build a competitive lacrosse program with only 8 games per year. • In New England, there are not enough dads that played competitive lacrosse. • Town program should provide accelerated training for new players. • In Hopkinton, there are not enough fields to support youth sports. The situation is getting worse, and its not just Hopkinton.

  5. Program Upgrades • Budget has doubled • Fundraising nearly tripled • MBYLL competitive schedule upgraded • More games • More focus on quality training • More focus on increasing the caliber of play among first time players

  6. Progressive Programs • Pre-Season Indoor Program is equivalent or better than Weston, Wellesley, D-S, Walpole, Mansfield, King Philip • Midweek & Preseason Scrimmages have doubled the number of games played per season • Collegian Coaches bring quality and relationships • Professional Coaches have been utilized and separates Hopkinton form run-and-gun lacrosse • Winter Skills Clinic solves the problem of new kids blending with experienced kids. • Marked contrast to programs that promote the elite. • MBYLL has upgraded our competitive schedule with East - MetroWest teams • Framingham State College to host our home games

  7. Fall Fling • HYL’s first fundraiser of its kind • November 15, 2008 • 83 people attended • Raised over $3,400 for the program

  8. Indoor Skills Program • Brand new for 2009 • Held at Fore Kicks in Marlborough • 8-week program geared to new players • Basics – catch, scoop & throw • 33 participants from Hopkinton and nearby towns– over subscribed. • Generated $400 net profit • Excluding non-recurring start-up costs the program generated $900. • 2010 could target two clinics.

  9. Indoor Skills Program Some feedback from parents: • “This was my son’s first attempt at lacrosse, and he not only enjoyed the clinic, but says he benefited from it as well by learning all the basics. He would do it again.” – Kathleen C, Hopkinton • “My son, Kris, attended the camp and had not played lacrosse before.  I found that the classes had a great ratio of kids/instructors so the lessons had better impact.  The instructors were enthusiastic and engaged the kids well.  I thought the classes progressed at a good pace, so they were learning something new every week.  Kris enjoyed going every week and felt he was prepared to go to his first real team practice.  Since he’s now gone to a few of his teams practices, he and I both can see that the program more than adequately prepared him for the season – he appears ahead of a majority of the other kids on his Spring team.”– Ralph S, Shrewsbury • “We do not have a lot of lacrosse experience at this point, but I thought the clinic was well-run and that the coaches were very knowledgeable.  We would definitely do it again.” – Kim C, Douglas

  10. Indoor Skills Program More feedback: • “I thought this program was great.  My son, Connor, wanted to try lacrosse but was intimidated by the fact that he had no idea to play and didn't want to jump into the season without any knowledge of the game.  This clinic worked out perfectly for him because it was geared at people exactly like him.  He knew a few kids, not many, but enough to feel comfortable.  He also really liked Coach Fajardo.  He learned all of the basics -- everything he needed to know to start the season.  As a result of his participation in the clinic, he has rolled right into the start of lacrosse and is having a ball playing with his new team.  Thanks for putting together this program -- I would recommend that you offer it again as I'm sure there are many people out there like my son.  Also, I really liked the ratio of coaches to kids.   I'm not sure how you can improve it, it seemed to have a nice progression of learning basics and adding new skills on from week to week until finally scrimmaging the last few weeks, which of course was the most fun!” - Becky D, Hopkinton

  11. Hopkinton Fields Field 13 - closed for the season Fruit Street Field • Degraded condition from overuse • HYSA plans to use it extensively on Saturdays this Spring Not enough fields to support demand 5X Recommended Usage per field

  12. Why Move to FSC? • No remedy in sight within Hopkinton • “Land Rush” on all available playing fields in the Metro West • Field conditions are not safe • Opponents have walked off Hopkinton fields, refusing to play • FSC is a partner that provides Turf Field, bleachers, and parking • HYL Gets 100% of Proceedsfrom the Concession Stand • Just 8 Miles from Downtown Hopkinton

  13. Volunteer for HYL! Immediate Needs for 2009 • FSC Concession Stand • Fundraising Thinking Ahead to 2010 • Board Members • Head & Assistant Coaches, Team Managers • Registrar • Field Coordinator • Fundraising

  14. CORI Checks • Massachusetts requires all youth sports organizations to complete CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) checks on all volunteer coaches. • HYL is in the process of obtaining CORI certification

  15. AED Donation • One of our members is donating an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the program! • CPR & AED training class scheduled for April 14 at the Fire Station

  16. 2009 Annual Meeting • We are looking to identify a location and date (sometime in June) • Election of officers for 2010

  17. Cannons Game • Saturday, May 16 • One of our U11 teams will play a mini-game at halftime! • Last year, over 200 HYL members enjoyed the event

  18. NCAA Championships • Memorial Day Weekend • At Gillette Stadium again • Record attendance last year

  19. MBYLL Jamboree • June 13, 14, 20, & 21 at Devens • HYL will try to get the first weekend again
