  1. Veterinarian Viridiana Diaz & Iriana Barajas Current Events Q4 04/04/11

  2. Description • Veterinarians study, treat, and control animal injuries and diseases. • They immunize healthy animals against disease and inspect animals and meat products to be used as food. • They also perform surgery, set broken bones, establish diet and exercise routines, and prescribe medicines for animals.

  3. Science Used • Scientific discoveries along with technological advances are helping veterinarians diagnose, treat and contain various diseases that impact all types of animals. • Research is allowing veterinarians to prolong the lives of many animals, with diseases that up until now, never had a cure.

  4. Math Used • For measuring material on animals casts • For length of string on stiches • For amount of soap in the 'animal' bathtub • When they need to amputate a limbs, they need to know how much inches • When they feed the animals they need to know how many cups • Same as above but with water • When they need to humanly euthanize (put to sleep) an animal, they need to know how much fluid to use • When something needs to come out of an animal's throat, they need to know how far to stick the tube down • When they give a dog a wheel chair they need to know how big the dog is to before they order the size, small, medium, large, X-large, X-small

  5. Technology Used • Laser Surgery - used to perform traditional soft-tissue surgical procedures, such as spays, neuters, and thyroidectomies • Endoscopy - allows doctors to see an animal’s internal organs by inserting a long, flexible tube into the body. The tip of the tube contains a video chip and a strobe light, and it captures images and sends them to a video monitor, this avoids actual surgery. • Ultrasound– produces very high frequency sound waves into the animal’s body and measures when the waves bounce back. • Echocardiography – special kind of ultrasound used to view the heart. • MRI - combination of powerful magnets and radio wave technology to produce images of animals’ internal organs and structures.

  6. Why did we choose this profession? Basically, it was chosen at random. But, it is a very interesting profession and it’s great to learn about it. What did we learn? Unfortunately, and kind of obvious, stoichiometry is also used by veterinarians. This makes sense because they must convert fluids from human quantities to animal quantities. Also we didn’t know that statistically most veterinarians work on ranches, rather than clinics. Why did we choose the articles we did? Basically because they provided us with all the information required, and it was very easy to understand. How has the past year helped us to prepare for this chosen profession? Well actually as hard as it is to believe, we actually have learned a lot about stoichiometry, and conversions. What additional skills would you need in order to be successful in this chosen profession? To be able to work with the machines that veterinarians work with. Also to be able to see an animal in pain.
