EURADE How to form a consortium Maastricht University – Centre for Contract Research Professional acquisition and management of research funding is both a complex process as well as an overall new mindset! The Centre for Contract Research manages this process and assists in the further development of such a mindset.

EU Funding: FP 7 • FP7 stands for Seventh Framework Programme for Research & Technological Development • The EU’s main instrument for funding research in Europe • Supports research in selected priority areas • Implemented by the European Commission (EC) • Running from 2007 to 2013 • Total budget = 53,2 Euro • An important budget increase from FP6

FP 7: Structure • Made up of 4 main specific programmes • Plus a specific programme on nuclear research (Euratom &JRC) • Integration of the international dimension into all specific programmes • The budget of the “Cooperation” specific programme is the largest one (around 60% of the total budget)

What types of FP 7 projects exist? • Collaborative Projects (CPs) Research projects, Integrated Projects (IPs): ambitious, large scale projects, objective driven research • Specific Targeted Research Project (STREPs): objective driven research more limited in scope than IPs • Specific International Cooperation Action (SICAs): R&D projects with developing countries or emerging economies (ICPC) • Networks of Excellence (NoEs) Instruments to overcome the fragmentation of the European research landscape in a given area

  7. What types of FP 7 projects exist? (2) • Coordination & Support Actions (CSAs) • Coordination Action (CAs): coordination of research activities (events / studies / expert groups etc.) • Specific Support Action (SSAs): support to research activities and policies (designed to underpin the implementation of FP 7) (fact findings / feasibility studies / data dissemination etc.)

  8. (Minimum) conditions for participation • At least 3 independent legal entities from 3 different EU Member States (MS) or Associated Countries (AC) • provided this minimum has been achieved, any number of additional participants from other countries can be included • interest organizations & entities established under Community law)

  9. Forming a consortium • Minimum 3 partners from 3 member states • Academic, industry and NGO (DPO) • Small/medium or Large collaborative projects • Visit FP7 meetings for networking purposes • Get in contact with yout NCP • Search the FP7 (and FP6) databases

Participating countries in FP7 Member States (blue): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Romenia Associated Countries (white): Switzerland, Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein and Norway Candidate Countries (green): Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey. Potential candidate countries (yellow): Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo issues.
