  1. BELLWORK Please wait silently for instructions. We have a lot we need to get through today, and the process will only go smoothly if you are quiet and pay attention! Schedule: • Registration for classes next year • Haiku Introduction • Disney song poetry

  2. Registration I am going to hand you your class selection sheet. Please keep a few things in mind: • You must select what type of future you are headed toward. • You will have to first select the CORE CLASSES that you must take to graduate. • You must then pick 8 electives. Your schedule will be determined based on how electives can be scheduled around core classes and/or Remedial Classes

  3. PLANNER: HOMEWORK Please finish pages 10 and 25 of your Poetry Packet.

  4. Haiku Introduction

  5. Haikus • We are going to talk, first, about the basic format of a haiku • A haiku only has three lines- it never has any more than that! • It is a short way to pack a big punch with words • In haikus, there are also rules in terms of syllables • Let’s do some syllable practice!

  6. Syllables • 1. How many syllables does your name have? • My name is Madison, so… • Mad-i-son • My name has three syllables • Clap and count out your own name! • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMrPvsYRgXA

  7. Haikus • Now that we have a grasp on syllables, we can start to grasp the format of the haiku • The haiku has three lines • The first line has 5 syllables • The second line has 7 syllables • The third line has 5 syllables

  8. Haikus • And, I’m going to show you a fun, foolproof way that you can always make sure your haikus are in the right form • You can sing it out! • Let’s watch an example: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqNLJuy28BU&t=31s

  9. Haikus • Now, this was a comedic way to write haikus, but it really was effective! • The song works in helping to write haikus and to see if it fits in the form- I can’t write haikus without this song!

  10. Haikus • Let’s take a few minutes to all write a haiku, and I will play the song in the background to help you • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqNLJuy28BU&t=31s • In a few minutes, a few of you will give me your examples, and we will all sing them together

  11. Now... • I will give you themes in which to write your haikus about • You will take a few minutes for each theme • On Friday, your group will submit two haikus to be put on our writing website, which I will link to on our website for you to see over the weekend!

  12. Theme One Please write a haiku about what you see outside of my window.

  13. Theme Two Please write a haiku about an object in this room.

  14. Theme Three Please write a haiku about what you think might be behind you (do not turn around).

  15. Theme Four Write a haiku about your favorite place in the world.

  16. Theme Five Please write a haiku about the biggest adventure you’ve ever been on.

  17. Theme Six Write a haiku about your pet. If you do not have a pet, write a haiku about your best friend.

  18. Theme Seven Write a funny (and school appropriate!) haiku.

  19. Now... • Keep those in your binder and ready for Thursday! • Now we will move on to pages 13 and 17 of your packet • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_AyUovLL7Q • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9MvdMqKvpU
