  3. What is CULTURE? The beliefs and actions that define a people’s way of life.

  4. What is POPULATION DENSITY? The average number of people in a square mile.

  5. POPULATION DENSITY • U.S. average is 88.08 inhabitants per square mile • Wisconsin average is 105.2 inhabitants per square mile • Is Wisconsin’s population more or less dense than the national average? For more stats….

  6. What is Birthrate? The number of live births each year per 1,000 people.

  7. What is an IMMIGRANT? A person who moves into a country. What is an EMIGRANT? A person who leaves the country to live in another place.

  8. Rural vs. Urbanization Countryside vs. the growth of city populations

  9. What is CULTURE HEARTH? Refers to a place where important ideas begin and from which they spread to surrounding cultures.

  10. CULTURE HEARTHat WFHS? How are ideas and trends transmitted amongst people?

  11. CULTURE CONVERGENCE Skills, arts, ideas, habits, and institutions come in contact with another culture The Macarena

  12. What is DIFFUSION? The process by which a cultural element is transmitted across some distance from one group or individual to another. Diffusion often occurs through the migration of people who take their cultural traits with them to new locations.

  13. CULTURE DIVERGENCE The restriction of a culture from outside cultural influences. Examples include: Berlin Wall North Korean border

  14. DEMOGRAPHY “The study of populations…” …the most recent statistical characteristics of a population. These types of data are used widely in sociology, public policy, and marketing.

  15. DEMOGRAPHICS These include gender, race, age, disabilities, mobility, home ownership, employment status, and even location. Demographic trends describe the historical changes in demographics in a population over time (for example, the average age of a population may increase or decrease over time).

  16. DEMOGRAPHICS Both distributions and trends of values within a demographic variable are of interest. Demographics are about the population of a region and the culture of the people there.
