  3. July 1958: Congress passes the “Space Act”,establishing NASA NASA launches small satellites in The Vanguard and Explorer programs Dr. Werner von Braun And the Saturn 5 rocket

  4. April 12, 1961: Soviet Yuri Gagarrin orbits the Earth,becoming the first man to see that the Earth was indeed round

  5. Manned Spaceflight in the US • “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade • is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth. No • single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more • important in the long-range exploration of space; and non will be so difficult or • expensive to accomplish” • President John F. Project Mercury: 1961 - 1963 • Goal: orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth • see: The Right Stuff, or read the book by Tom Wolfe Freedom 7 May 5, 1961: Alan Shepard is launced into space Duration of flight: 15 minutes Altitude: 116 miles Velocity 5134 mph Friendship 7 February 20, 1962 John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the Earth Duration of the flight: 4 hours, 55 minutes Velocity: 17,544 mph Orbited 3 times The Mercury 7

First woman in space June 1963: Russians send Vladimirovna Tereshkova into space, who orbits the Earth 48 times NASA picked 13 female astronauts, the Mercury 13, who passed the same tests as the all-male Mercury 7, but never flew in space The first American woman in space was Dr. Sally Ride, who went up in the Space Shuttle in 1983
