  11. DWD Assimilation system 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  12. Soil moisture production Assimilation- system Terra-ML ELDAS at DWD 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  13. Terra-ML needs SMA to reduce bias in T2m 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  14. Soil moisture production Assimilation- system SMA-ml ELDAS at DWD 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  15. Adapt 2-layer SMA to multilayer model • SMA is started every daily cycle at 0:00 UTC analysis time. • Soil moisture at the previous day is adjusted to reduce forecast error of screen level temperature during day time. • The variational procedure requires an additional 15 hour forecast for every soil layer. • Due to computational costs this can not be done for 5 or more layers in an operational system. • Therefore different layers in the multilayer system are combined to two layers and the SMA is performed for these two layers. • Finally moisture increments are redistributed to the multilayer system 24 h routine forecast t0+12 / +15 h t0+24 h t0 = 0:00 running SMAfor t=t0 2 additional 15 h forecastsj‘ = j+ 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  16. T2m sensitive to soil moisture in layer 3-5 (3-81cm) 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  17. Functionality of multilayer SMA • Two main qualitative criteria • Positive soil moisture increments for positive temperature bias (i.e. T2m(fc) -T2m(obs) > 0) • Strong impact for clear sky conditions, no impact in cloud covered regions 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  18. It works ... T2m(fc-ana) (K) Swnet (W/m2) May, 1st 2000, initial state wb(ana-routine), upper layers (mm) wb(ana-routine), lower layers (mm) 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  19. Soil moisture production OUTPUT Validation at Alterra ELDAS at DWD 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  20. Submission to Alterra • 6 day validation test period: • Extracted from DWD archive, results are presented in validation appetizer by Cor Jacobs and Eddy Moors. • 2 month validation period: • Results submitted, storage into MARS still to be done • Full 15 month period: • Further preparation of assimilation system. 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  21. Model setup for soil moisture production 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  22. Soil moisture production OUTPUT Storage into MARS ELDAS at DWD 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  23. Mars archiving • Output parameter list is defined • Interpolation works (as shown for input) • To prepare • Implement data transfer line • Adapt grib output from interpolated fields to MARS requirements • Submit test data from 2 monthly experiment 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  24. Benefits from Eldas, scientific impact • RhoneAgg • Validation and improvement of physics from multilayer model • Availability of validation data based on numerous models • Validation at Alterra • Improvement of model Bowen ratio with LAI from ecoclimap • Improving soil moisture state • Availability of validation data based on measurements • Running multilayer scheme in assimilation system • Adaptation of multilayer scheme for operational use • Adaptation and implementation of soil moisture analysis for multilayer scheme 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  25. Benefits Eldas-(community) • Contribution to RhoneAgg • SMA scheme • First test data for implementation of validation procedure • Optimize soil moisture state for a full operational forecast system 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003

  26. Time schedule 2nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003
