  1. Chapter 1 Notes What is Science

  2. I. Science science comes from the latin word scire “ to know” A.Theories and Laws *Theory- most logical explanation of events

  3. *Law- theory that has been tested many times, and is generally accepted by scientist

  4. B.Scientific Method * a systematic approach to solving a problem (pp13) 1. State the problem 2. Gather information 3. Form hypothesis 4. Perform experiments 5. Record and analyze data 6. State conclusion

  5. Scientific Method cont. * hypothesis- educated guess * Variable(I. & D.)- the one factor that is being tested * Experimental setup- the part that contains the I. variable * Control setup- same as ES, but does not contain the I. variable

  6. Scientific Method cont * Data- recorded observations and measurements - in order to become a law, the results must be able to be reproduce many times.

  7. Branches of Physical Science pp 6 * Chemistry- study of what substances are made of and how they change and combine * Physics- study of forms of energy and the laws of motion - prefixes

  8. II. Scientific Measurements pp 15-19 * Metric System- standard system of science A. Length - basic unit is meter B. Volume - basic unit is liter/ 1ml=1cc C. Mass- basic unit is kilogram

  9. Scientific Measurements D. Density- mass/volume E. Temperature- Celsius F. Dimensional Analyst- worksheet

  10. III. Tools of Measurement A. Length B. Mass C. Volume D. Temperature
