  1. RF and Controls aspects Dirk Vandeplassche Luis Medeiros Romão SCKCEN MAX International Design Review Brussels, 12-13 November 2012

  2. Introduction Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • global reasons for reliabilityneed : • reactorsafety • plant availability • acceleratorlinked aspects : • operationalreactorrequirements acceleratorspecifications • accidentalreactorrequirements 100% reliablebeamshut off • machine protection • reliability goal : generalprinciples to beapplied for obtaininghigh MTBF • "moderate" performances • "conservative" technologies • ! faulttolerance redundancy

  3. Introduction Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • conformityof ancillarysystemswithreliability goal • faulttolerance • weights of ancillarysystems in global reliabilitybalance must beevaluated : important role of reliabilitymodeling • cooling • cryogenics • vacuum • 2 global systemsdeserveparticularemphasis : • RF power • Controls & Diagnostics • reliability in otherdomains of activity : cfr. telecom

  4. RF power generation for CW Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • e- tube amplifiers have problems: • low gain  chain, with no faulttolerance • HV power supplywith sensitive protection circuit (crowbar) • consider the possibility of obtaininghigh power from a parallelcombination of manylow power modules  conceptualrecovery of faulttolerance • benefits of a SS modular RF amplifier : • large number of highgain elements • built-in redundancy • detailed diagnostics • 50VDC power supplies, againmodular

  5. RF power generation http://www.nxp.com/documents/application_note/AN10967.pdf Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  6. RF power generation Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  7. RF power generation BLF888A-based amplifier driver Measurement 700 MHz Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  8. RFQ@UCL 176 MHz, + LLRF from IPNO Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  9. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  10. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Once more reliability goal: the importance of diagnostics and controlsisfundamental • for keeping the machine operational • for the implementation of the faulttolerant scenarios "The reliability of the acceleratorcanonlybe as good as the reliability of its diagnostic system." • 2 questions: • faulttolerance? redundancy? • resolve 2 fault aspects of a diagnostic item with a single principle?

  11. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Somethoughts : • the diagnostic system must beoverdetermined– this deals withmissing detectors • an overdetermined diagnostic system can in principlebechecked for consistency – this deals withwrong information • consistencyrefers to a model • thereforeweneed on-line machine simulations to berun: beam simulations based on actual settings and measured values = virtualaccelerator "A workingvirtualaccelerator concept as an integral part of the control system is vital for a highreliability machine."

  12. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • do more with the diagnostic system : • will have many data points as function of time  applystatisticalmethods to obtain • time analysis • trends • predictive power "Long runsrequirepredictive diagnostics." • Basic features : • self-diagnostics • auto-calibration

  13. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Someverypreliminary concept ideas about the control system • diagnostics have become an integral part of the control system, physically and functionally • obvious pt.#1: reliabilityrequirement – how ? • obvious pt.#2: hardware and software aspects – limits are fading at LL • importance of global architecture • keywords: uniform, homogeneous • the chance we have : no history, no backward compatibility, from scratch

  14. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012

  15. Controls & Diagnostics Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Initial choicesregarding global architecture : • classical 3-tier structure • EPICS as global framework/toolkit • global communications : • Gigabit Ethernet • including timing  Synchronous Ethernet • slow signals : typical SCADA approach • industry solutions, typ. PLC • field bus Profibus

  16. Controls & Diagnostics • PCI-Express • VME • μTCA Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Furtherchoices (dreams?) : • lowlevel for fastsignals : • avoid local operating systems wide application of FPGA's • Carrier + Mezzanine model • goal #1: FPGA-embedded EPICS IOC • goal #2: LLRF-FMC

  17. Controls & Diagnostics + Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Some more remarks : • MPS: verycritical system: 100% reliable, no false interlocks • maybeSafety-PLC-based, if fastenough (interface ?) • willsurelyfeaturehardwiredinterlock(s) • absolutereactorsafetywillrequire a "first physicalprinciples" actuatedbeamshut-off system • principal windowfailure must cause immediatefast valve closure • need for specificstudy • middle tiergets extra importance due to permanent on-line services : • warnings, alarms, interlocks • virtualaccelerator • predictiveactivities • ... and to the need for global system supervision • self-check • self-repair

  18. Conclusions Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 • Reliability of ancillarysystems has not yet (and could not yet) beconsidered as an R&D topic in our FP-programs (except for 704 MHz SS-RF) • RF: trying hard to go full SS in order to getvery relevant hands-on experience • ... but the say 6 €/W barrierremainsratherhigh(but luckilywe are CW) • Controls : • choices are preliminary, and some of them are dreams • new developments, fundamentallyreliability-oriented, are essential for the faulttolerant machine we are aiming at.
