Why do so many Electronics Programs close due to low enrollments?. If Math and Science were electives, would they ALSO have low enrollments? Of Course they would! Core Electronics Classes (DC, AC, Analog, Digital) are advanced math and science intensive.

Why do so many Electronics Programs close due to low enrollments? • If Math and Science were electives, would they ALSO have low enrollments? • Of Course they would! • Core Electronics Classes (DC, AC, Analog, Digital) are advanced math and science intensive. • DC and AC are actual last chapters inside Physics Textbooks. Yet they are Introductory chapters inside Electronics Textbooks.

  2. What to do? • Upgrade Electronics Programs • Meaningful and… • Relevant and… • Exciting and… • Realistic and… • Rewarding and… • In touch with Current products. • Train them for Careers not even invented yet!

  12. Note to All The next slide “Electronic Systems” is a work in progress (WIP) to re-invent the senior year. We have a few systems such as robotics, microcontrollers, communications, fiber, soldering, solidworks, Labview, and a couple certifications. But due to funding limits, we’ll slowly be adding other systems within the coming years (hopefully). It may take years to complete barring a miracle!  Dave Miles

  14. Not all 80 of the following Systems have been added yet. But Hopefully One Day!!! This could help Recruitment. Why?? Because students would learn how to setup test fixtures, measure, calibrate, and diagnose with a more meaningful electronic systems.

  30. In Closing: • I STRONGLY believe this is by far, one of the best programs a future technician or engineer can take within a Maryland High School. • Unfortunately many don’t. Why? • Many capable students are still pushed away from CTE by Guidance Counselors, scheduling, and/or parents. • University Scholarships are usually awarded towards academia rather than CTE. • Community College Scholarships are usually awarded towards academia rather than CTE. • Therefore – Lets push for SOLID pathways between High School CTE Electronics, Community Colleges, and Universities via scholarships awards. (One Option)

  32. 1st Step • Work with MHEC about scholarships for Electronics Students (Example) http://www.mhec.state.md.us/pressroom/May2007/May07StateScholarshipMoneyAvailableTeachingNursingPublicServices.asp • If our students could get specialized scholarships, our enrollments could increase. • “PUBLICIZE” the scholarship opportunities to incomming freshmen and sophomore PARENTS.

  33. 2nd Step • Through the assistance of MSDE and MHEC, establish a continuous working relationships with the following Community Colleges, Technical Schools, and Universities of whom offer Electronic related degrees/certifications:

  35. 3rd Step • Keep MSDE and MHEC involved as we establish a continuous working relationships with National Level Electronics Manufacturers such as (for example) Northrup Grumman, K&L Microwave, toy manufactures (Playstation, leapfrog), …etc. • Instead of begging for money, we need: • Sample Products, with Schematics - of products not older than one year and updated annually as newer type products hit the market. • Maybe we could get them to donate Failed Products from their assembly lines with a test set and specs. Why throw them away? • Their technical expertise (teacher summer training, advisement board meetings..etc.) WE MUST KEEP THEM INVOLVED! • Donated test equipment and Robotics that have been upgraded.

  36. 4th StepSpread the word to other states • I would be willing to setup and run a meeting in Kansas City in June during the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference. • I would have access to the top Secondary and Community College Electronics programs from across the nation. • I could invite other professional affiliates for networking. • We could establish a national infrastructure of Electronics Educators with Program Modeling and sharing.

  37. 5th StepSee if MHEC may consider implementing a Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant (WSSAG) for CTE Students. • Make State scholarship money available for students pursuing careers in Electronics through 2x2x2 Career Pathways.

  39. 7th StepWith the grants, establish Annual Meetings and Training Workshops for Electronics Teachers • Face-to-Face • Online • Hybrid

  40. Finally,This would be a HUGE initiative(May need initial grant support) • To be successful many sectors must become active: • Electronics Teachers • Electronics Industries • MSDE • MHEC • Community Colleges • Universities • Technical Schools
