  2. Before DO decide what your goals are… • Scientific goal • Plan measurement with goal in mind • Use experiment design tools when appropriate • Fuzzy thinking produces fuzzy results… • Do preliminary measurements as far in advance as possible • Don’t screen samples at the MagLab

  3. Before Do your homework • Read the info on the web • Re-read the info on the web • Study the info on the web • Apply for time – take care of the details • Don’t apply at the last minute… • Do apply to the right user program... • DOE - allow much extra time, especially for foreign nationals…

  4. Before Do communicate • Talk to the experts – review your plan and goals • Offer to collaborate if appropriateAPS – If work not possible without person contribution, they deserve to be offered author status • Communicate assumptions – don’t assume • If you don’t know communicate that as well

  5. During Don’t be an asshole • Do admit mistakes • If you break something let someone know • If something is broken – don’t put it back on the shelf; label the problem and bring it to us • If you have a problem, ask for help • Know enough to know if you have a problem • Don’t take tools, equipment, stuff without asking • If you take stuff, bring it back! • If the answer is no don’t ask again • If its against the rules, don’t do it anyway • Treat others the way you would want to be treated!

  6. After Do your reporting • Get your reports in on time and using the proper templates (read & follow the instructions) • Report resulting publications • Acknowledge the lab in publications • Report students graduating, etc. • Let us know about your successes

  7. After Do provide feedback • Provide constructive criticism about how to make facility better. • Thank the people that helped you and made your work possible

  8. Its all about the preparation Piss poor planning prevents proper performance Failure to plan is planning to fail
