  1. 6-1: Territorial Expansion • Louisiana Purchase- France wanted to sell it to the U.S. for $15 million. • The Louisiana Territory would double the size of the U.S. and give us control over the Mississippi River • Controversial Issue- no place in the Constitution allowed the president to buy the land

Jefferson changed his views from strict constructionist to loose b/c it benefited the country • U.S. acquired the land and sent out the Lewis & Clark Expedition • Frontier- name give to the unsettled territories out west. Closed in 1890 • Manifest Destiny- desire to control all of the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Led to U.S. expansionism for the rest of the 1800s

  5. Texas Annexation • Texas territory was controlled by Mexico but many of the inhabitants were Americans who owned slave • 1836 Texas wins its independence and is a free country from 1836-1845 • Texas is peacefully annexed (taken over) by the U.S. in 1845 by Pres. Tyler

  7. Mexican American War 1846-48 • Mexico was upset by losing Texas and Americans wanted to fulfill their Manifest Destiny desire • Pres. James K. Polk was an expansionist and went to war with Mexico • U.S. wins the war and pays $15 million for the Mexican Cession.

  9. Gold Rush • 1848 Gold was discovered at Sutters Mill in California which led to the Gold Rush of 1849. • Thousands of Americans and Asians begin to flock to California • Gadsden Purchase- U.S. paid $10 million for small strip of land along Mexico for a Southern Transcontinental RR

  12. Oregon Territory • U.S. and GB had shared the territory • 1840s both countries claim to own more land than the other • “54-40 or Fight”- became a battle cry to go to war over the area • 1846 Settle set a dividing line along the 49th Parallel
