  1. Environmental Policies and Programs

  2. Establishing Environmental Objectives • We establish and administer objectives, targets, and management programs to translate our Environmental Policies into reality -- and we will continuously review these objectives, targets and programs for further improvement of our environmental performance.

  3. Products • Konica Minolta is one of the world’s most respected technology innovators, helping our customers speed the flow of information and expand the scope of digital imaging. In both manufacturing and product performance, we strive to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact. Here are some of the many ways our products save energy, reduce waste and promote recycling.

  4. Simitri-HD Pulverized Toner 3 2 Environmental Load 67.6% 1 58.5% 60.4% 0 Konica Minolta—Environmentally Friendly • Simitri HD polymerized toner is produced by an environmentally-friendly manufacturing process • Process emits approx. 40% less CO2, NOx and SOx than conventional toner manufacturing processes CO2 (kg/kg) SOx (g/kg) NOx (g/kg)

  5. Simitri HD Toner • In 2006, KMBS released Simitri HD Polymerized Toner, which is capable of fixing at a temperature about 20°C lower than the original Simitri Polymerized Toner, enabling users to further reduce energy consumption by roughly 15%. Polymerized Toner Ordinary Toner

  6. Duplex Printing • When it comes to forest resource conservation, paper use reduction in offices is important; double-sided printing is an effective means of achieving such reduction. The bizhub realize high-speed printing when outputting double-sided color pages, thanks to a paper feed control system that feeds three sheets alternately. This system offers productivity equal to single-sided printing, and makes it easier to reduce paper use in offices.

  7. Induction Heating Technology • As part of its effort toward energy-saving for digital MFPs, Konica Minolta is committed to reducing power consumption during the fusing process, by employing induction heating (IH) fusing technology. • In fiscal year 2005, Konica Minolta released the bizhub 750/600, which was the first product to introduce the IH fusing technology. It achieved a significant reduction in energy consumption as compared with its predecessor. At the time, the bizhub 750/600 boasted the highest energy-saving level in the market. • In 2007, we introduced the bizhub C550, the industry's best energy-saving model in it’s segment. Compared with the bizhub C450, the bizhub C550 can output ten more pages per minute, while achieving a 41% reduction in energy consumption . • In 2009, Konica Minolta introduced the next generation of energy saving models, that reduced heat, power consumption and CO2/NOx/Sox.

  8. Power only where you need it • In operation, bizhub Series models optimize power consumption for each operating mode -- controlling the flow of power to save energy wherever possible. For example, when the bizhub prints from a PC or receives a fax, the power supply is adjusted so that no electricity is sent to the scanner or to other idle sections of the product.

  9. Designed with recycling in mind • Plastic parts are made of recycled materials where possible. • All plastic parts are marked to indicate the type of resin used. • Labels that leave no adhesive residue are used. • To simplify recycling, parts are designed so that they can be disassembled by a single person without special tools.

  10. Toner Bottle Recycling • All Konica Minolta toner bottles are made of HDPE, or High Density Polyethylene -- identified by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) as one of the two types of plastics that can be recycled most economically. These toner bottles are designed to be collected and recycled at local facilities, reducing fuel and gas required by shipping.

  11. Chemical Substance Control • bizhub MFPs contain none of the hazardous substances listed in the European Union's RoHS Directive. • (These include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls [PBBs], and polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs].)

  12. Low Noise, Low Emissions • The bizhub’s offer low-noise, low-gas-emission performance. • These models meet the RAL UZ-122 standards of the Blue Angel Mark, a German environmental rating, which specify noise levels less than 75 dB and TVOC* emissions less than 18 mg/h.

  13. Toner Recycling system • Our original Toner Recycling System collects, recycles, and re-uses toner that is not transferred to the paper during the printing process in MFPs. This results in saving 20% of the toner from going to waste.

  14. 100 TONS Outer Casing Plastics • The outer casing parts for every Konica Minolta MFP are made from the same two types of plastic, creating a closed material-recycling loop for recycling plastics from end-of-life MFPs and incorporating them into the production of newer models. With this process, we have enabled the recycling of high purity plastics, recycling approximately 100 tons of plastics annually

  15. Recycling Plastics and Packaging Materials • To recycle and re-use as many materials as possible, Konica Minolta uses the same two types of plastic in outer casing parts for MFPs. • Our recycling facilities are equipped with crushers and mechanisms that remove foreign matter to support this process, resulting in the recycling of 100 tons of plastic each year. • Konica Minolta also focuses on reducing and recycling packaging materials

  16. Energy Saving Printing Tips Most Konica Minolta products can be automatically programmed to save paper and enter Power Saving modes. Here are a few of our recommended printing tips: • Setting print drivers to Auto Duplex default. • Setting each device to Auto Duplex default via its control panel or administrative software. • Shifting each device to “Power Save Setting” after a selected interval. • Printing presentation handouts and other documents at least “2 UP” to combine several slides on one page.

  17. Energy Saving Printing Tips cont. • Using “Proof Copy” to verify that printing and finishing parameters are correct before making full print runs. • Using energy-saving mode settings on MFPs outside of normal business hours. • Printing to devices that are energy efficient, productive, and cost-effective -- even if this means expanding internal energy while walking away from our desks to use centrally located devices. • Consolidating imaging devices with one centrally located MFP that uses less energy.

  18. Policy • Konica Minolta participates in a wide range of manufacturing and procurement programs to protect the environment -- and our products meet many eco-friendly international certification standards for energy conservation and recycling.

  19. Reducing CO2 Emissions • Konica Minolta has set target goals for CO2 emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our products -- including manufacturing, distribution, operation and disposal. Our goal is a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by the year 2010.

  20. Meeting Level 2 Zero Emission Standards • In all of our 15 manufacturing facilities in Japan, Konica Minolta follows a strict program to minimize the volume of externally disposed waste. Our manufacturing sites had already met Level 1 criteria, including resource recovery rate over 90% with less than 5% final disposal rate. In March, 2008, we achieved Level 2: reducing the volume of externally disposed waste by 30% per sales unit over fiscal 2001 levels.

  21. Restricting Hazardous Substances • In July, 2006, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) came into effect in the European market to restrict the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and two types of polybromic fire retardants (PBB and BPDE). As of March, 2008, we have phased out these substances in all our MFPs and printers.

  22. Clean Planet Program Initiative to collect and recycle used toner cartridges Voluntary program offers free return of used toner Return shipping label included in each toner box or available online Over 2,000,000 consumables collected to date (U.S. & Puerto Rico) Cartridges refurbished to new condition and reused Parts recycled from cartridges Cartridges disposed of through approved methods Clean Planet Program

  23. Energy Star Program • The majority of Konica Minolta models, including magicolor, pagepro, bizhub PRO and bizhub, are Energy Star certified. • New guidelines were introduced in 2007, making it more difficult for copiers, printers and multifunctional devices to earn Energy Star labels -- but our bizhub and other imaging devices continue to achieve certification.

  24. Other Environmental Labeling Programs • Eco-Mark: certification that a product has low environmental impact as recognized by the Japan Environmental Association. • International Energy Star: this program, implemented under a joint U.S.-Japan agreement, uses the Energy Star mark to label energy-saving OA equipment that meets its guidelines. • Blue Angel: the world’s first environmental-protection label, introduced in Germany in 1978, certifies that products and services have low environmental impact. • EcoLeaf: a program that quantitatively identifies and discloses the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle.

  25. Recycled Paper • In an effort to further promote environmental conservation, Konica Minolta is constantly certifying specific brands of recycled papers for our bizhub MFPs, magicolor and PagePro printers. • Please consult the Konica Minolta public website for a list of approved and tested recycled papers.

  26. 100% Post Consumer Recycled Paper Certification Project New Leaf Encore 100 • 100% Post-Consumer Waste, • Processed Chlorine Free • Manufactured with electricity that is offset with Green-e® certified renewable energy certificates. • FSC certified • Ancient Forest Friendly • 92 Brightness

  27. Certification Details • KMBS will perform testing on various papers when requested. This test includes running an amount of paper equal to 1/3 the Preventative Maintenance (PM) cycle. If the paper passes the test, it is added to the approved media guide for the corresponding MFP models.

  28. Phase one: Pre-testing • Pre-testing is the beginning of the paper test process. During this phase 1000 sheets of paper are run through the machine to test for very basic paper feeding and image reproduction ability. If the paper passes it goes onto phase 2. Phase two: Complete test • The complete test involves running enough paper to determine if it will run reliably through the machine for an extended period of time and copies. The number of sheets is equal to 1/3 the PM cycle of the machine. If the machine does not have a PM cycle then 1/3 of the drum or developer (starter) life will be used.

  29. During the complete test the following items are checked… • Image quality • Thin line reproduction • Background • Proper fusing of image • Proper image registration • Acceptable half tone reproduction • Paper curl • Single sided • Double sided • Mis-feeding and jamming • Finishing • Sorting and stacking • Stapling (if requested) • Folding (if requested) • Saddle stitch (if requested)
